Philanthropist
Jean
Shafiroff
was not
even in the
country last
week but her
presence was
clearly felt
at the
inaugural
Art
Southampton.
Shafiroff, a
prominent
figure on
the New
York-Hamptons-Palm
Beach
circuit was
in Italy
when her
glamorous
portrait by
internationally
acclaimed
Nigerian
artist
Ikee Ud
was unveiled
at the Leila
Heller
Gallery at
Art
Southampton
during the
VIP Preview
reception to
benefit
Southampton
Hospital
attended by
3,600 of the
Hamptons &
New York's
collectors
and power
players.
Crowds
swarmed Leila
Heller's
booth to get
a glimpse at
Ude's
portrait of
the woman
who has
become famed
not only for
her generous
philanthropy
but her
elegant
personal
style. The
portrait was
displayed
with
additional
featured
works by
artists
including
Rachel Lee
Hovnanian
and Ran
Hwang among
others.
Depicting a
be-jeweled
and be- gowned
Shafiroff in
a
provocative
pose
lounging on
a chair, the
image
clearly
draws
comparison
to an
international
style icon
of another
era -
Audrey
Hepburn
with whom
Mrs.
Shafiroff
shares a
common link
in terms of
combining
philanthropy
with a
unique
personal
style.
No stranger
to
celebrity,
Iké Udé
is one of
New York’s
most famous
social
figures. As
an artist,
he is
acclaimed
for his
unique
talent in
photographing
elegance.
His work is
included in
the
collections
of many
institutions,
including
the Solomon
R.
Guggenheim
Museum and
the
Smithsonian
Museum. As a
writer, he
first served
as fashion
editor of
Flash Art
International,
before
editing the
Style Index
and aRude
Magazine. He
is the
author of
Style File
(Harper
Collins,
2008), and
of many
essays. In
2009, Vanity
Fair
included him
in its
International
Best Dressed
List.
Jean
Shafiroff
hands-on
involvement
with the
multiple
causes she
supports is
indisputable.
She
possesses a
remarkable
ability to
connect
different
charitable
groups with
interested
people and
resources.
Jean wears
many hats as
a board
member,
chairwoman,
underwriter,
and hostess
of numerous
charity
events.
In 2010 and
2011 she
chaired the
Southampton
Hospital
Annual
Summer Gala,
which raised
$1.7 million
and $2
million,
respectively.
Jean’s board
memberships
include The
New York
Women’s
Foundation,
JBFCS,
French
Heritage
Society, The
Couture
Council,
Lighthouse
International
Advisory
Board, and
Southampton
Bath &
Tennis Club
Charitable
Fund.
As a board
member of
The Couture
Council,
which
supports the
museum at
the Fashion
Institute of
Technology
(FIT) in New
York City,
Jean hosted
and
underwrote
The Couture
Council’s
private tour
of IMPACT:
50 Years of
the CFDA at
the Museum
at FIT and a
following
luncheon at
Hotel
Americano in
February,
2012; in
September
2011, she
was one of
many
underwriters
for the
Daphne
Guinness
exhibit at
The Museum.
This
September,
Jean will
serve as a
vice chair
of The
Couture
Council
luncheon
honoring
famed
fashion
designer,
Oscar de la
Renta.
Jean has
been
dazzling red
carpets
throughout
the city and
Hamptons in
some of her
favorite
designers
including
Oscar de la
Renta,
Carolina
Herrera,
Victor de
Souza,
Fabiola
Arias
and
Nanette
Lepore,
and has also
been
profiled on
the Chic
Index as a
fashionable
New Yorker.
The
inaugural
Art
Southampton
presented by
Art Miami,
the premiere
International
Contemporary
& Modern Art
Fair and
marketplace
for
acquiring
the finest
works of art
available in
the Hamptons,
made its
long - and
eagerly -
awaited
Hamptons’
debut at the
height of
the social
and cultural
season this
summer. The
elegant art
fair held in
a massive
white
pavilion
drew 11,750
collectors,
designers,
philanthropists,
major art
world
figures and
art
enthusiasts.
Both
collectors
and dealers
were
unanimous in
their praise
for the
fair, rating
it A+ and
long
overdue. So
enthusiastic
were the
participants
that many
signed on
for Art
Southampton
2013 when
Director &
Partner
Nick
Korniloff
announced
that he &
his partners
were making
the fair an
annual
tradition.
