Uniting Against Lung Cancer’s
“Kites for a Cure®” Sees A Successful Sixth Year; Raises $60,000 for Lung Cancer Research

***

1,100 People Gathered on Cooper’s Beach in Southampton
to Combat Lung Cancer

(Southampton, NY –May 30, 2012) – The skies above Coopers Beach in Southampton this Memorial Day weekend were filled with kites flown by the 1,100 people who assembled at the beach to support lung cancer research and remember those who were lost to the number one cancer killer. The sixth annual “Kites for a Cure ®” took place on Saturday, May 26 from 4-6 p.m., and raised $60,000 for innovative lung cancer research throughout the country.

Mark Epley, Mayor of the Village of Southampton, is a strong advocate for the event, having lost his father to lung cancer eight years ago.  “‘Kites for a Cure’ is a wonderfully unique event – not only is it a fundraiser for lung cancer, but it also serves as a memorial, a way for family and friends to share a moment to honor those who have passed from the disease.  The Village of Southampton is proud to participate in such a worthy cause, and we look forward to many more Kites events on Coopers Beach.”

Rechler Equity Partners, a Long Island real estate developer and the firm behind the Hampton Business District at Gabreski, was a presenting sponsor of this year’s “Kites for a Cure.” Gregg Rechler, managing partner at Rechler Equity Partners said, “As a local businessman, I’m overwhelmed with pride at the chance to sponsor ‘Kites for a Cure,’ to give back to a community that has given so much to us. It’s also a chance for me to remember my father, Roger Rechler, who we lost to lung cancer four years ago. I’m so happy to see all of these people show up to support Uniting Against Lung Cancer’s mission.”

For a $30 donation, each participant received a blank, high-quality white kite which they could decorate with drawings, photos or messages of hope and love for those suffering with lung cancer. Markers in every color imaginable were provided at beachfront art stations where eager kite flyers gathered to decorate their kites. All proceeds from “Kites for a Cure” will go to Uniting Against Lung Cancer’s research grant program.

“We’re thrilled by the great turnout and positive energy brought forth by all involved at the sixth annual “Kites for a Cure,” said Linda Wenger, executive director for Uniting Against Lung Cancer. “We hope that attendees were able to take with them a heightened sense of awareness for lung cancer, which affects an overwhelming number of never smokers, yet receives less funding per death than any other cancer. “

Uniting Against Lung Cancer was founded in 2001 in memory of Joan Scarangello, a Southampton resident and non-smoker who lost her battle with lung cancer.  In just eight years, the foundation has awarded more than $8.5 million in research grants to find a cure for the disease that will claim an estimated 160,000 lives in the U.S. this year.

Lung cancer will kill more Americans this year than colon, breast, pancreatic and prostate cancers combined, and more women than breast, uterine and ovarian cancers combined. Yet it receives less federal research funding per death than any of the other major cancers.

Uniting Against Lung Cancer (UALC), a 501 (c) (3) organization headquartered in New York, is dedicated to finding a cure for lung cancer by providing funding for innovative research, and to raising awareness of the nation’s #1 cancer killer. For more information, please visit www.UnitingAgainstLungCancer.org.
