Farewell Luncheon in New York

Wang Chaobin
Report by: Dr. Jaeanie Yi
a prominent Chinese entrepreneur
and Chairman of Zhonglu Group
in Henan.
Member of the Chinese Peoples Political
Consultative Conference
The Chairman of Industry and Business
League in Henan,
Henan Taxing Estate, Co. Ltd, Board
Chairman
Thirty years ago, he became the first
Chinese entrepreneur ever to appear on
the Forbes list, and he has remained on
the global rankings for many years. He
is widely regarded as a symbolic figure
of China’s entrepreneurial rise during
the Reform and Opening-Up era.
Over nearly four decades in business,
Wang Chaobin has achieved four national
“firsts”:
1. A pioneer of China’s first generation
of minibus transportation.
In the early reform years, when public
buses were in severe shortage across the
country, he took the initiative to
organize one of China’s earliest minibus
systems, easing urban transportation
pressure and improving daily mobility
for countless people.
2. Founder of China’s first “Overseas
Returnees Garden.”
He was the earliest advocate for
building residential communities for
returnees from Hong Kong, Macau, and
Taiwan, enabling them to purchase homes
in China. This project launched his real
estate career and led to the issuance of
China’s first development permit for a
residential community designated for
foreign and overseas Chinese residents.
3. Among the first entrepreneurs to urge
the central government
to abolish agricultural taxes.
At a time when farm taxes placed heavy
burdens on rural households, he
repeatedly submitted recommendations to
national leaders calling for reduced
peasant taxation, helping to catalyze
important policy discussions and
eventual reform.
4. The earliest proponent of
establishing a
“China Banking Regulatory Commission.”
During the exploratory phase of China’s
financial-system reform, he was among
the first to point out the need for a
dedicated institution to supervise the
banking sector — a forward-looking
viewpoint that contributed to the
thinking behind the later establishment
of the CBRC.
Throughout his career, Wang Chaobin has
upheld a consistent belief:
“Cooperation between China and the
United States
is the best choice for both countries.”
He often emphasizes that entrepreneurs
must not only operate according
to the law, but also act with gratitude
— only then can they shoulder greater
responsibility
in an era of rapid change. |
