New York Metro Chapter, International Special Events Society (ISES)to Present the Affiliate with the 2009 Big Apple Core Award

New York, NY, The New York Metropolitan Chapter of the International Special Events Society (ISES)  presented the Greater New York City Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® with its 2009 Big Apple Core Award (Celebrating Outstanding Results from Events) at its 2009 Big Apple Awards gala.  The event took place at The Lighthouse, Pier 61, Chelsea Piers in Manhattan.

ISES is honoring the Affiliate for successful implementation of the Komen NYC Race for the Cure®. The Race, scheduled for Sunday, September 13, 2009 in Central Park, is entering its 19th year. In 2008, the event drew more than 25,000 people — including nearly 1,700 survivors — and raised a record-breaking $5.71 million. The funds were used to award $2.7 million in grants to community-based service organizations and clinical research enrollment trial programs in the greater New York City metropolitan area, and $1.3 million for national peer reviewed research to find the cures. Sex and the City star and breast cancer survivor Cynthia Nixon was Race Grand Marshal; Mayor Michael Bloomberg was Honorary Race Chair.

In its announcement letter, ISES stated, “We applaud your efforts to put your charity front and center within the local and national landscape, and to create a platform for facilitating a dialogue about issues facing more and more women each year…we are pleased to honor your organization for utilizing this event as a marketing vehicle to achieve your goals.”

The award will be accepted by Komen Greater NYC CEO Dr. Dara P. Richardson-Heron.

About Susan G. Komen for the Cure

Susan G. Komen for the Cure — Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became Susan G. Today, Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. Thanks to events like the Komen Race for the Cure®, we have invested over $1 billion to fulfill our promise, becoming the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.
