Better World Books & Feed The Children
Take on Poverty Through Literacy

Better World Books and Feed The Children
Take on Poverty Through Literacy

Online retailer of new and used books and
nonprofit organization to donate millions of titles
 to underserved children nationwide

Better World Books, Feed The Children

ATLANTA, GA (January 12, 2010) – Better World Books announces today a partnership with renowned nonprofit relief organization Feed The Children to deliver millions of children’s books to families in need.  This is a new initiative for Better World Books, a for-profit venture that collects and sells new and used books online, donating a portion of each sale to help fund literacy causes worldwide.

As a result of the partnership, Better World Books contribute high quality surplus books to Feed The Children for distribution to families unable to purchase books on their own. The surplus titles will be pulled from the thousands of titles donated to Better World each year from libraries and universities making room for new editions.  Initial distribution efforts will include ten children’s books in each of Feed The Children’s personal care shipments.

"Literacy is recognized as one important gateway out of poverty, and for many families, literacy is impeded simply by a lack of access to books,” said Better World Books CEO David Murphy. “Feed The Children are experts at serving families in need, and we look forward to working alongside them to make a difference in the lives of disadvantaged children.”

The first stage of the partnership will serve families from Feed The Children’s Elkhart, Indiana distribution center, with plans to expand nationwide as the program develops.  As of January 11, 2010, Better World Books has shipped over 339,221 books for distribution to underserved families with the help of Feed The Children.

“Education is a key component in our effort to help children in need,” said Erin Carlstrom, Director of Education Programs at Feed The Children. “Many of the children we serve have never owned their own books and the partnership with Better World Books provides a wonderful opportunity to improve their lives.

Every book bought on www.BetterWorldBooks.com  funds global literacy through Better World Books' five primary non-profit literacy partners (the National Center for Family Literacy, Books for Africa, Room to Read, Worldfund, and Invisible Children), as well as nearly 100 other non-profit organizations.

ABOUT BETTER WORLD BOOKS

Better World Books diverts books from landfills by conducting book drives on 1,800 college campuses, and by collecting discards from over 1,800 libraries. Since its founding in 2003, the Mishawaka, Ind.-based company has raised over $7 million for its non-profit literacy, library and college partners; donated over 1.3 million college textbooks; diverted more than 29 million pounds of books from landfills; achieved over 9,000 tons of carbon offsets through carbon-neutral shipping, and created more than 200 full-time jobs with meaningful benefits.
