TAMPA – January 29, 2009
– It was estimated that in 2008 more than 244,000 women would be
diagnosed with breast, cervical, uterine or ovarian cancer. More
than 63,000 would die. Today, women are more proactive about
their own health, and empowered women never get down: they get
moving. Nearly 300 of them attended Moffitt Cancer Center’s (in
Tampa) Women’s Cancer Symposium at the Kravis Center, Cohen
Pavilion on January 29, to learn firsthand from cancer experts
about how to prevent and treat women’s reproductive cancers.
Three Moffitt cancer experts led a discussion about medical
breakthroughs and state-of-the-art research that is taking place
to bring an end to cancer: Dr. Anna Giuliano, the chair of the
Department of Epidemiology and Genetics and a program leader in
the Risk Assessment, Detection & Intervention program; Johnathan
Lancaster, the chair of the Department of Women’s Oncology and
Director of the Center for Women’s Oncology; and Susan Minton,
an associate member of oncology in the Don & Erika Wallace
Comprehensive Breast Program also took questions from the
audience.
During the luncheon, Palm Beach Gardens resident Deborah
Llewellyn asked guests to join her in Moffitt’s Merit Society.
The Society raises funds and awareness to help more
than 80 female physicians, surgeons and scientists at Moffitt fight
cancer. Also, Leah Miles, regional associate director of major
gifts at Moffitt invited guests to Tampa to tour Moffitt’s
state-of-the-art facility.
Thanks to sponsors, the event was successful raising funds for
breast cancer and women’s reproductive cancer research at
Moffitt. Sponsors were: Bank of America; Elizabeth Belger,
Jenks Commercial Realty; Beverly Bell-Proffett, NurseShark
Consulting; John Biondo; Lisa Blum, Estelles Organic; Dr.
Melanie Bone and Linda Bradley, USA Leadership Association;
Bethesda Hospital Foundation; Jean Brown-Fischer, Cancer
Alliance of Help and Hope, Inc.; Lawrence Casey; Allison Cacella,
