The Human Rights based approach |
|
|
Leaving no one behind is the bedrock of the
2030 Agenda, the internationally agreed collective approach
to bring the world closer to the principles of prosperity,
equality and sharing enshrined in the Universal Declaration
of Human Rights and human rights treaties.
The human rights-based approach is the UN framework for
human development. RASIT and Cansu Global translate this
approach into Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI), three
complementary elements in ensuring that no one is left
behind. Equity refers to fairness and justice in the way
people are treated so that they all get equal opportunity to
live healthy and productive lives. Diversity acknowledges
development measures will affect people from different
genders, socio-cultural, ethnic, and religious backgrounds
differently. Inclusion refers to the right to participate,
irrespective of social status, affiliation, or gender. An
EDI lens on development can provide different groups in
society with the means and tools that give them equal
opportunity in life, allowing and empowering them to
participate on an equal footing in development interventions
that concern them.
Statements from leading entities in the field will address the need or
necessity of equity, diversity and inclusion to achieve
sustainable socio-economic development that leaves no one
behind.

Women in Science and Society: Bridging Voices to Action
|

water and recognize its fundamental role
in society’s life, prosperity and development.”

The first Women Water Forum of the
Water for Sustainable Development Action Decade,
co-organized by RASIT in 2018 in Dushanbe, Tajikistan,
revealed that women scientists are underrepresented in the
water and development domain. Another important conclusion
of the Forum was that in order to achieve equitable and
sustainable socio-economic development, there is a need for
problem-oriented and transdisciplinary research, which
connects academic, public and private spaces.
This Conversation brings together renowned female scientists and experts
from different disciplines, viewing water challenges from
their respective angles and defining synergies and
complementarities for holistic water for sustainable
development solutions that face the contemporary challenges.
“Women in Science for Water and Society” in particular examines the issues
of water from a social sciences lens. It will explore:
• Culture and relevant fields of social sciences into water
strategies, including management and sustainable solutions;
• Cooperation between local knowledge holders & scientists
in finding sustainable solutions to water related problems;
• Cultural dialogue to developing educational & capacity
building methods; and,
• Solution-oriented water governance that takes into account
all facets of cultural diversity.

Reviving Peace Through Science-Based Water Diplomacy

become a source of conflict
and wars in the future.”

Water crises can shake societies, destroy livelihoods, and
threaten prosperity for decades. They can also be the spark
that sets aflame a powder keg of social and political
issues, resulting in violent conflict. Peace is not just the
absence of conflict. It is also the ability to handle
potential conflict by peaceful means, such as effective
risk-reduction strategies for water scarcity and crisis.
This Panel will address water crises as a threat to
stability. Scientists, government representatives, water
experts, and multiple stakeholders will discuss effective
pathways of water diplomacy in the context of the
longer-term impacts from climate change, growing
populations, and continued digitalization and construction
development.
This Conversation will discuss:

Moving the Water Conversation Forward |
|
|
Water, Sanitation, Hygiene, and Ocean issues are at the core
of sustainable development as they are closely
linked to several key global challenges such as energy, food
security, health, biodiversity, climate change, among
others. Creating awareness and earning commitment from
decision-makers and the public for these issues is vital if
we are to influence policies and practices that affect the
lives of millions – particularly the disadvantaged.
Media play an important role in conveying information and
knowledge, which contribute to educating and sensitizing
policymakers and the public.
The Media Room will be open to journalists to talk to women and experts in
water-related sciences, as well as UN officials, Member
State representatives and advocates for SDG6, highlighting
their role in achieving SDG6 and its nexus.

Development |
Water is life and a key enabler for social and economic
development. Fresh water is a vulnerable and
increasingly scarce and uncertain resource.
Investing in water for socio-economic development is not only a
prerequisite for achieving the transition to equitable and
sustainable development, but it will also create multiple
wins across the board for human health and well-being as
well as the integrity of
the Earth’s vital ecosystems.

Re-Shaping Water Economics for
Inclusive Green Growth
|
Water yields benefits and goods as a renewable natural
resource. Its underpinning of economic activity is
not factored adequately into conventional economics.
Currently, natural resources are being exploited beyond safe
planetary limits. Contemporary economic planning needs to
integrate the value of natural capital into calculations of
value. If this is not done, the risks presented by water
scarcity, water pollution and the disruption of the water
cycle will increasingly manifest themselves through
declining economic production and upsetting of the social
order.
Strategic investments in the water sector have the capacity
to unlock the economic potential of entire regions, improve
livelihoods and boost public health. If the SDG 6 framework
were to function as a decision support tool, guiding scarce
resources towards priority areas of need, this would enhance
its functionality and enhance its adoption and use not only
at national level but also at subnational level.
This Conversation will address the
following issues:
• What role does water and its nexus have in national
economic plans?
• How is STI factored into water economics?
• How are water investments envisaged to facilitate
inclusive green growth?
• What reforms are necessary to ensure that water is or
remains available, accessible, and affordable for all?
• Recommendations on re-shaping water economics to achieve
sustainable, equitable and inclusive green growth.

There is no functioning of the economy without water. Water
flows from the fields where materials grow,
through the complex supply chains and manufacturing
facilities, all the way to corporate headquarters.
Innovative technologies and support to innovation is
essential in the transition towards a more sustainable
inclusive and fair green growth. This would be in line with
the
Glasgow Declaration on the Fair WaterFootprint. In this
sense appropriate technologies that transform resource
management can help the business sector to significantly
reduce its water footprint.
