New York, April 27, 2007. Founders of The Jeffrey Modell
Foundation Vicki and Fred Modell honored Philip Altheim and
raised $1.4 million to benefit Immunology research at their
“Spring Ahead ‘07” black tie Gala on Thursday evening, April
26, 2007 at Cipriani 42nd Street with music and performances
by Starlight Experience.
Each year The Jeffrey Modell Foundation, established in 1987
by Vicki and Fred Modell in memory of their son, Jeffrey, who
died at the age of 15 from complications of Primary
Immunodeficiency (PI), raises funds and awareness of the
disease, a genetic defect in the immune system that causes
children and adults to have frequent, often hard to cure or
fatal infections. In America alone, more than 500,000 people
suffer from one of the 100 known PI diseases.
The Jeffrey Modell Foundation (JMF) is a multi-faceted global
nonprofit foundation devoted to the early and precise
diagnosis, meaningful treatments, and ultimately cures of PI,
and is focused on physician education, public awareness, and
clinical and basic research to better understand and treat
these Immunodeficiencies. To date, ther e are 35 Jeffrey
Modell Research and Diagnostic Centers in the U.S., Canada,
Europe, Middle East and Asia. Recently they collaborated with
the NIH and Affymetrix to develop a Gene Chip using Microarray
technology to do Newborn Screening of Severe Combined Immune
Deficiency. The Modells have raised over $40 million for
research and education since starting the Foundation in 1987.
