Literacy Partners kicked off plans for its annual
"Evening of Readings" May Gala, at a cocktail reception
held at Michael's. The reception celebrated the
upcoming May gala, which raises funds to support the
Literacy Partners mission of teaching adults basic
literacy, writing and math skills.
Syndicated columnist Liz
Smith, Arnold Scassi and partner Parker Ladd who have
served as Co-Chairs of the "Evening of Readings" more
then two decades were on hand at Michael's to welcome
this year's Gala Honorees, David and Julia Koch. The
reception also celebrated the writings of four
extraordinary authors: MSNBC correspondent Chris
Matthews, (Life's a Campaign: What Politics Has
Taught Me About Friendship, Rivalry, Reputation, and
Success); AJ Jacobs (The Year of Living
Biblically); Ann Patchett, (Truth & Beauty);
and Azar Nafisi (Reading Lolita in Tehran: A Memoir
in Books).
On May 12, 2008, more
than 500 guests are expected to attend the annual
"Evening of Readings" at the State Theatre. Past guests
have included: Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, Yoko Ono,
Lauren Bacall, Harvey Weinstein, Barbara Walters,
Vanessa Redgrave, Frank Langella, David Westin, Helen
Gurley Brown, Mort Zuckerman, Sirio Maccioni, Dominic
Dunne, Judy Licht, Jerry Della Femina, Diana Taylor,
Somers and Jonathan Farkas, Chris Cuomo, Sir Howard
Stringer, Barry Diller, Diane von Furstenberg, Barbara
Taylor Bradford, Penny Siegal, and others.

Yorkers learn the basic reading, writing and math skills
needed to succeed in day-to-day living. Through
