Plastic tape dispensers are rarely recycled
and contribute to the 25% increase in plastic waste
generated during the holiday season. Ying Liu is an Asian
American mom on a mission to solve the plastic problem
through innovation.
Former teacher, Apple executive, and
ecopreneur, Ying’s epiphany struck at a landfill, where the
sight of endless waste juxtaposed against the ocean horizon
hit too close to home. As a mother, she couldn’t stand the
idea of her children being unable to enjoy the ocean later
in life. Enter Blue Lake Packaging, developing affordable,
sustainable, fiber-based alternatives to everyday products.
Ying’s latest innovation, launched December
5, is a biodegradable alternative to traditional household
tape and single-use dispensers with just as much sticking
power and dispensing force. Every aspect of the product,
from the packaging to the dispenser and the tape itself is
100% plastic-free.
“My kids and I used to apply the single-use
tape and dispenser to crafts, boxes, and gift wraps all the
time. I got a strong sense of guilt every time I threw away
the empty rolls and dispensers,” says Liu, a former Apple
executive who worked in Product Operation and Supplier
Responsibility.
Now available on Amazon,
Blue Lake ECOLIFE Plastic-Free Tape and Dispenser is made
from a fusion of wood and cotton fiber and caters to the
growing number of shoppers seeking eco-friendly products.
For additional context, a press release, Ying’s bio, and
details about the company can be accessed here.
To celebrate its launch, ECOLIFE Plastic-Free
Tape sets are being
offered at a promotional price of $10.99 for opaque
paper tape
and $9.99 for clear
tape (reg.
$15.99). For more information visit bluelakeecolife.com/or Amazon.

More about Ying Liu
Ying Liu, originally from Beijing, relocated
to the U.S. in 1997. Despite having an engineering degree,
her first career was teaching Chinese at Hamilton College.
She pursued an MBA in supply chain and finance at Michigan
State before joining Apple in 2000, where she played a
pivotal role in diverse positions, from materials management
to corporate social responsibility.
Among her most notable achievements was
establishing Apple’s procurement operations in China in
2004. She was instrumental in expanding Apple’s footprint in
the region, laying the groundwork for its dominance in the
mobile phone market.
Returning to the U.S. in 2007, Ying shifted
focus to product operations and supplier responsibility at
Apple. Her expertise covered various manufacturing
processes, enriching her industry knowledge. She ventured
into entrepreneurship, starting with travel planning
software. Her passion for sustainability was ignited while
researching eco-friendly packaging, leading her to witness
the environmental impacts of plastic waste firsthand.
This experience led to the creation of Blue
Lake Packaging, a company dedicated to providing recyclable
plant-fiber-based alternatives to traditionally
plastic-dominated industrial packaging solutions and
household products.
