Having seen
Christine
Ebersole on
Broadway in
"Grey
Gardens",
the
Musical
in 2006,
including
opening
night with
Al Maysles
and 5 other
performances
it was an
exhilarating
pleasure to
see and hear
her in
concert in
Guild Hall
(East
Hampton).
She won
a Tony Award
for her
"Grey
Gardens"
performance
in which she
played both
"Big Edie"
and "Little
Edie"
Bouvier
Beale to
standing
ovations
nightly.
I was
honored to
invite Lois
Wright to
the
performance.
Lois lived
at "Grey
Gardens" in
the 70's and
was there
when the
Maysles
Bros.
(Albert and
David)
filmed their
world famous
cult
documentary
"Grey
Gardens".
She is in
the film's
birthday
party scene.
Lois is
a writer*
and
painter**
and for over
20 years has
produced her
own talk
show "The
Lois Wright
Show" on LTV
Wainscott/E.Hampton.
Before
this 7/31/10
performance,
Lois
presented
Christine
with two of
her new
prints with
Little Edie
and two cats
- one in a
light blue
background
and the
other in a
pink
background.
Richard
Novak, East
End master
home builder
and "Grey
Gardens" art
collector,
also
attended.
He is a
friend of
Albert
Maysles, and
met "Little
Edie" and
"Big Edie"
in the
1970's and
then drove
them home to
"Grey
Gardens".
Christine's
show had a
quartet
accompanying
her superb
voice -
piano, bass,
drums and
clarinet/saxaphone.
There was a
selection of
American
classics.
After
Intermission,
she came out
with a scarf
around her
head "a La
'Little
Edie'"
Bouvier
Beale and
received an
ovation for
her
Tony Award
Broadway
performance.
She did a
few songs
from the
musical.
It was
a relaxing,
elegant and
delightful
performance.
Some of the
quests
included
Matthew
Broderick,
Sara Jessica
Parker,
William
Hurt, Dina
Merrill and
Tom Hartley
as well as
Ruth
Appelhof,
executive
Director of
the Guild
Hall. Josh
Gladstone,
Artistic
Director of
the
John Drew
Theater was
also in
attendance.
It was
a brilliant
evening and
to quote the
11 year old
"Little
Edie" from
her 1929
Diary's
opening
line:
"I only mark the hours that shine."
