Off-Broadway, Cock, by Mike Bartlett,
is about a young gay man, who leaves his lover for a woman. He cannot
make up his mind whom he prefers. The circular theatre is shaped for a
cockfight, and the four member cast circle around each other like cocks
in a ring for ninety minutes. Be warned, the wooden seats with a thin
pillow are uncomfortable.
American Theatre Ballet (ABT) presented a splendid
La Bayadere, choreography by Natalia Makarova, brilliantly
performed by Gillian Murphy, Denis Matvienko and Simone
Messmer in the leads. Act II in the Kingdom of the Shades is
spectacular, and Murphy and Matvienko deserved the thunderous applause.
Empire, in the Spiegelworld tent, is an
adult ninety minute circus/burlesque/vaudeville entertainment,
featuring pretty, sexy ladies and talented men, who provide non-stop
fun. A wonderful singer, a fine musician and recorded music add to
the amazing feats performed by these astonishing acrobatic artists.
They are remarkable, and the audience cannot stop applauding. And
you will think about bananas in a new way. The opening night party
took place in the tent and among the guests was Constantine
Maroulis.

The New York City Ballet presented Double Feature, choreography of Susan Stroman. It's a fun filled two one act ballets. Both recreate silent movies. The Blue Necklace, music of Irving Berlin, is a story of a dancer (Maria Kowroski), who abandons her baby daughter (Callie Reiff, and as an adult Sterling Hyltin) and is then reunited with her eighteen years later. The dancers are terrific, but little Callie Reiff steals the show as an eight year old mistreated adopted daughter. The second ballet Makin' Whoopee!, music by Walter Donaldson, is hilarious, about a young man (Joaquin De Luz), who has to get married on the same day to inherit seven million dollars. Tiler Peck is his eventual bride. It is one of the most entertaining ballets in the repertoire.
I returned for a superb night of three ballets by Balanchine Concerto Barocco, Tschaikovsky Pas de Deux and Symphony in C, plus Fancy Free by Jerome Robbins It was a delightful, well danced program.
We were invited back to see Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark. It is truly a fine family entertainment, and the audience in the packed house gave the cast a standing ovation.
Former Met Carlos Beltran held a fundraiser for his Baseball Academy for Underprivileged Youth in Puerto Rico. The party took place at Sofrito.
Joe Sirola held his Annual Champagne & Roses Soiree in his penthouse, with many guests like KT Sullivan, Steve Ross and Bill Boggs.
Film Society at Lincoln Center presents The 2012 Human Rights Watch Film Festival June 14-28. I saw Call Me Kuchu, by Katherine Fairfax Wright and Malika Zouhali-Worrall, USA, 2012, which is a shocking documentary, about the activism of David Kato for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights against a proposed Anti-Homosexual Bill in Uganda. He was murdered. This is a powerful film, and an indictment against intolerance and shabby journalism.
Rangoon, by Mayank Keshaviah, is a well acted realistic play about an Indian family settling in the South of the United States and adjusting to a new way of life. The cast and creative team celebrated opening night at Ollie's.
