MoMA presented Ongoing
An Auteurist History of Film. Hori Ma
Panenko (The Firemen's Ball), by Milos
Foreman, Czechoslovakia,
1967, is a comedy, which makes fun of an
event in a small town. Apparently, the
firemen's union and the communist party were
not amused, and the director was forced to
seek asylum in the United States. It is an
entertaining film about the party mentioned
in the title, with a large cast of eccentric
characters.
MoMA is
presenting Marco
Bellocchio: A Retrospective until May 7. Diavolo
in corpo (Devil in the Flesh),
France/Italy, 1986, is an adult film, with
many daring sexual scenes, about an older,
neurotic woman (Maruschka
Detmers). While her fiance is in jail,
she engages in a passionate affair with a
high school student. The actress gives a
fearless performance, and the film is quite
provocative for its time.
