On Broadway, A Christmas Story, the Musical, book by
Joseph Robinette, music and lyrics by Benj Pasek and
Justin Paul, is family musical based on the 1983 film.
The children, headed by Johnny Rabe as the lead are
simply terrific. The family will enjoy it. The opening night
party took place at Lucky Strike Lanes with guests like
Jennifer Damiano, Jill Paice and James Barbour.
Off-Broadway, The Outgoing Tide, by Bruce Graham,
is a family tale about a father with Alzheimer's Disease and his
relationship with his wife and son. The three actors are fine in
this realistic, sad play. The opening night party was held at
Lavo with guests Steve Guttenberg, Penny Fuller and
Peter Tear.
Checkers, by Douglas McGrath, has Anthony
LaPaglia and Kathryn Erbe play Richard and Pat Nixon
when Nixon's political career was saved with his speech about
his dog. The acting is fine with a sympathetic view of their
life.
Vanya and Sonia and Marsha and Spike, by Christopher
Durang, is a mildly amusing play about a group of Chekhovian
characters updated to present time in Bucks County. A good cast
works energetically whining about their wasted lives.

A revival of Golden Child, by David Henry Hwang, is about a Chinese family in Fujian in 1918-19, where polygamy and the horror of foot binging still exist.cAfter three years in the Philippines, a businessman decides to modernize his family and convert them to Christianity. It is an interesting, well acted play.
New York City Center presented An Encores Special Event Cotton Club Parade, a fast moving 90-minute spectacular of a jazz program that was presented in the 20s in Harlem. A talented group of performers sang and danced to the tunes which were popular at the time, many composed by Duke Ellington, featuring Jazz at Lincoln Center All Stars, conducted by Daryl Waters.
The Ziegfeld Society and The Paley Center for Media presented Playhouse 90's The Helen Morgan Story, shown on May 16, 1957, the last live performance in that series. It starred Polly Bergen, who won and deserved an Emmy for that performance. Eric Myers introduced the program and Rex Reed held a conversation with Polly Bergen after the screening. It was a delightful, informative afternoon at the Paley Center.
Opera in Cinema from Emerging Pictures presented Le Nozze di Figaro, by Mozart, from the Royal Opera House in a live performance from February 2006. Erwin Schrott (Figaro) and Gerald Finley (Count Almaviva) gave well sung performances, and Miah Persson was an adorable Susanna. Her voice was strong, with a lovely timbre in every register. She was a delight to watch. Antonio Pappano led the orchestra, which played splendidly, with the rest of the cast offering fine support to a charming performance
