On the Town With Aubrey Reuben
Where All the Stars Shine Brightly!
November 2, 2013
10-29-13 (L-R) Honoree Carol Lawrence. Billy Goldenberg (seated)
Tammy Grimes at the "Never Give Up" Gala at 3 West Club. 3 West 51st
St. Monday night 10-28-13
On Broadway, Big
Fish, book by John
August, music & lyrics by Andrew
Lippa, based on the novel and film of the same title, is about the tall
tales a father (the always wonderfulNorbert
Leo Butz) tells his son. Although the scenes of his tales are vividly
brought to life with great imagination by director/choreographer Susan
Stroman, it is a rather mediocre musical.
A
revival of Betrayal, by Harold
Pinter, is surely one of the highlights of the Broadway season. It
features three brilliant stars under the direction of Mike
Nichols. Jerry (Rafe
Spall) betrays his best friend Robert (Daniel
Craig) in an adulterous relationship with Robert's wife (Rachel
Weisz). In nine short scenes going backwards from 1977 to 1968, we see
how this occurred. It is a memorable night in the theatre.
After
Midnight opens on Broadway on
November 3. I will write about this production of song and dance in Harlem
in my next column.
Off-Broadway, Becoming Dr.
Ruth, by Mark
St. Germain, is a one woman show, in which Debra
Jo Rupp does a 100 minute
impersonation of Dr.
Ruth K. Westheimer. It takes place on June 9, 1997, in the apartment
she is leaving in Washington Heights. We watch her pack her books,
photographs, treasured objects, and talking occasionally on the phone,
while addressing the audience, detailing her life from birth in Germany,
to living in Palestine, and then to becoming a celebrity in America.
Fans of this tiny lady with an enormous ego may enjoy this production.

La Rosetta, 243 West 14th St, is the new, charming
Italian restaurant. We attended a delicious media tasting of

by chef Fred

I attended a press conference at the Quebec Government Office to
announce the concert that the Orchestra of St. Luke's will offer
at Carnegie Hall on December 10. The orchestra will be conducted
by JoAnn
Falletta, with soloist Alain
Lefevre (who was
present) playing two piano concertos by the late Canadian
composer Andre
Mathieu, who was considered a child prodigy. There will also
be two screenings of a film made about Mathieu's life.
The Carter Burden Center for the Aging celebrated its 42nd
Anniversary Gala at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. The honoree was John
C. Phelan, Co-Managing Partner, MSD Capital, L.P. It was a
lovely event.
There was a beautiful memorial celebration for June
Springer at the
Players Club. Many guests spoke about her glorious spirit and
warmth, including her son, Gary Springer. It
was a privilege to know her. She was a wonderful lady and she
will be deeply missed.
Film Society of Lincoln Center is presenting Peter
Mettler: Pictures of Light November 8-12. I saw Picture
of Light, by Peter
Meetler, Switzerland/Canada, 1994, a documentary about the
filmmaker taking a 1,000 mile train journey to the north of
Manitoba to film the Northern Lights. He meets villagers, while
crossing barren snow covered empty wasteland, and attempts to
photograph the Northern Lights, capturing interesting images.
10-29-13 Chef Fred Mero presents a whole
salmon
at a media food tasting at La Rosetta.
