On
Broadway, a revival of The
Winslow Boy, by Terence
Rattigan, is about a young naval cadet, who is forced to leave his
school accused of stealing a five-shilling postal order from another
student's locker. When the young boy claims he is innocent, his father
decides to hire a lawyer to defend him. This leads to a national scandal and
trial, resulting in all sorts of complications for the family. It is an
old-fashioned, well acted play.
A
Time to Kill, based on the novel by John
Grisham, adapted for the stage by Rupert
Holmes, is a courtroom drama. It opens on October 20, and I will write
about it in my next column.
Off-Broadway, a revival of The
Seagull, by Anton
Chekhov, is quite different from the original. Instead of Russia, it is
set in Ireland, with all the names of the characters changed. Starring Trudie
Styler, it has many interesting moments, but it hardly deserved the
change in venue. The opening night party at Bear & Grill attracted many
guests, including Sting (Styler's
husband), their daughter Mickey
Sumner, Joe
Mantello, Ian
McKellen and Sean
Mathias.

The Model Apartment, by Donald
Margulies, is a powerful, well acted play about two
survivors of the Holocaust. The couple has retired to Florida,
but have been pursued by their mentally disturbed daughter.
Their hope for peace is turned into a nightmare. The opening
night party took place at Sarabeth's with guests like Mandy
Patinkin(husband of cast member Kathryn
Grody), Lee
Wilkoff and Lewis
J. Stadlen.
I attended a press preview of After
Midnight, which opens on November 3. Four selections were
presented to the media, including a song by Fantasia
Barrino, introduced by director/choreographer Warren
Carlyle, and they were sensational. The cast, singers and
dancers, and musicians The Jazz at Lincoln Center All-Stars are
terrific. I predict the show will be a smash hit.
I attended a magnificent press preview of an exhibition at the
New York Public Library for the Performing Arts The
Line King Library: Al Hirschfeld at the New York Public Library
October 17 - January 4, 2014. It is the largest exhibition
of Hirschfeld's artwork and archival material. The artist
documented almost the entire twentieth century of American
Theatre. Every theatre fan must see this free exhibition. You
will leave rewarded.
The press screenings of the 51st
New York Film Festival September 27 - October 13 ended
with her, by Spike
Jonze. USA, 2013. It is a film set in Los Angeles in the
future. A lonely Joaquin
Phoenix falls in
love with a disembodied voice (Scarlett
Johansson) in his computer. If one can accept that, then the
weird relationship can be followed. I cannot. For me, it was an
overlong ridiculous film with dull, boring characters.
