SAG/AFTRA
MERGE IN A
NEW OFFICE
IN NYC

SAG/AFTRA
THE
MERGER
OF TWO
UNIONS
Photos
and
Article
by Dr.
Michelle
Clough
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For
many the
merger
of SAG/AFTRA
was a
long
journey
home.
Many actors from the past years before the unions were available lost
wages
with out
seeking
residuals
and this
to many
actors
was a a
life
changer
as they
didn't
always
receive
the full
benefits
from
their
works.
Congress
in 1935
passed
the
National Labor Relations Act.
This was
the
beginning
of the
rights
for
creativity
to be
protected.
American
labor
unions
Screen
Actors
Guild
and the
American
Federation
Of
Television
and
Radio
Artist’s
both
formed in
the
1930’s
Thus
creating
a
stronger
protection
of
artist.
It had
been a
long
time
dream to
many to
see both
of the
unions
unite
.On the
opening
day of
the
NewYork
offices
located
across
from
lincoln
center
with
breathtaking
views
open
designed
and yet
closed
off
glass
spaces
with
modern
updates.
Designed
by the
architectural
firm
from La.
called
AREA .
Tours
were
enjoyed
and
refreshment
were
served..
I had a
chance
to speak
with the
sag
president
Ken
Howard a
long
time
actor
and
former
Yale student whom said this merger was “ A Good One” and I knew he meant
that as
he's
been an
advocate
for many
actors
and even
took the
time
during
the open
house to
meet and greet members.
Many
other
delegates
from Sag
Aftra
were on
board
also to
meet and
greet
the
members
during
the open
house.
And the
Nyc.
local
chapter
president
Micheal Hodge even recalled a work he had done early on in his career
that is
still
playing
on
netflix.
So many
stories
and a
long
time
history
in the
arts and
this new
space ,
place
and time
which
will
live on
long
term to
fight
for the
rights
of
artists
in the
entertainment
business.
The
unions
stand
strong.
