WALL STREET JOURNAL COLUMNIST IS GUEST
SPEAKER AT AFHU SCHOLARSHIP LUNCHEON
“Leaders of Distinction” Awards
presented to area supporters of The
Hebrew University
PALM BEACH, FL – Over 200 supporters of
American Friends of The Hebrew
University packed the ballroom at the
Four Seasons Hotel in Palm Beach on
March 15th to hear Bret Stephens, Deputy
Editor and foreign affairs columnist of
the Wall Street Journal address the
organization and to honor local
community leaders
who received special recognition at the
2012
Scholarship Luncheon.
Helen Eisenberg, Adrienne and Alan Fiske
and Dini Katz were honored at the event
and received the prestigious American
Friends of The Hebrew University Leaders
of Distinction Award.
Dr. Adam Zaidel, Ph.D. in Neuroscience
from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem
was the event’s special guest at the
luncheon, as well as at a private
cocktail reception the evening prior at
the Palm Beach home of Dr. Maria Spinak.
Luncheon Chairs were Ellen Klersfeld,
Sheldon Hechtman and
Dr. Maria Spinak with Diane Belfer, Rita
and Ernest Bogen, Roberta and Stanley
Bogen, Sherry and Kenneth Endelson, Ari
Rifkin, Rita and
Harold Wolfson and Donald Vinik serving
on the luncheon committee to name a few.
At the awards luncheon, Mr. Stephens
provided a journalist’s perspective on
the growing Iranian threat toward Israel
and the world. Twice nominated for the
Pulitzer Prize, Stephens is a regular
panelist on The Journal Editorial
Report, carried weekly by the Fox News
Channel.
Proceeds from the luncheon will benefit
students on scholarship at The Hebrew
University of Jerusalem, which ranks
57th worldwide. Founded in 1918 by
Albert Einstein, Chaim Weizmann, Sigmund
Freud and others, the university counts
Nobel laureates as well as Israel’s
prime ministers, Knesset members and
Supreme Court justices among its
distinguished alumni.
By providing scholarships for Hebrew
University students, American Friends of
The Hebrew University assure that Israel
remains a beacon unto the nations at
present and in the decades to come. A
full two-thirds of the students work
part-time and struggle to fund their
educational expenses. Many have
fulfilled military service and have
young families to support. “Our
contributions in support of scholarships
enable them to achieve their
professional goals and dreams,” noted
Sheldon Hechtman, President of the
Southeast Region Board of American
Friends of The Hebrew University.
