Palm Beach, FL
– Amanda Schumacher,
President and Founder of Tree of Life
Foundation International, Palm Beach,
FL, hosted Walk in My Shoes Luncheon on
May 19 at her residence. Proceeds from
the event will benefit Tree of Life
Foundation International’s medical
branch, supporting 100 percent of the
surgery for Hai Nguyen, a young man who
lives in Vietnam. Since a very early
age, Nguyen has been afflicted with
neurofibromatosis, a genetic disorder of
the nervous system that causes tumors to
grow on nerves.
After learning about Nguyen’s medical
situation, representatives of Tree of
Life Foundation International contacted
Dr. McKay McKinnon, a renowned
Chicago-based plastic surgeon. Dr.
McKinnon is willing to take his medical
team to Vietnam to perform this very
high-risk surgery.
Dr.
McKinnon has performed many tumor
removal surgeries, including an 18-hour
surgery in 2000, when he operated on a
woman with a 200-pound tumor. The event
drew worldwide attention. In 2004,
McKinnon traveled to Romania, along with
12 other doctors, to perform a 10-hour
operation to remove an 80-pound tumor
from a 47-year-old woman. The woman
suffers from a genetic disorder causing
tumors to grow on her body.
Some of his surgical
contributions have been presented on The
Learning Channel, Discovery Health
Channel and The Oprah Winfrey Show.
