New York, NY – August 24, 2012: The Islamic Circle North
America (ICNA) will distribute 5,000 free backpacks filled
with school supplies throughout the five boroughs of New
York. The Back to School Giveaway program is a national
campaign to distribute 30,000 backpacks to children of all
faiths in low income areas across the country. The annual
event is organized by ICNA’s domestic relief department,
ICNA Relief USA.
The Back to School Giveaway, a project of the Islamic
Circle of North America (ICNA), began as a local initiative
in 2009 to bring free school supplies to low-income families
in Yonkers, NY. The goal was simple—to help neighbors in
need, regardless of race or religion, as they struggled to
conquer the never-ending list of supplies for the new school
year.
ICNA’s 2012 New York launch giveaway event takes place on
August 24th. City Council member Robert Jackson and other
community leaders will be in attendance. There will be 11
distribution centers throughout Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens,
Staten Island, and the Bronx from August 24th-September 2nd.
The Back to School Giveaway provides tools for education,
promotes a better future for our children, encourages
activism and builds bridges between communities.
