B. Riley Securities presented the 14th
Annual
Sugar Ray Leonard Foundation
"Big Fighters, Big Cause" Charity Boxing Night at
The Ritz-Carlton, Marina del Rey.
Actor and comedian Chris Spencer hosted
the star-studded event which featured
three action-packed live fights
presented by Golden Boy Promotions, a
National Anthem performance by
singer-songwriter Claire Khodara, and a
live and silent auction display
featuring unique items and experiences
and legendary memorabilia.
The evening honored Fire Station 69’s
Captain Jeff Brown, Apparatus Operator
Mike Romero, Engineer Chris Burton,
Firefighter Eric Mendoza and
Firefighter/Paramedic Daved Jarueguy
with the 2025
Golden Glove Award.
These brave local heroes were among the
very first to respond when the
devastating Palisades fire erupted on
January 7, exemplifying extraordinary
courage, strength, and dedication in the
face of overwhelming danger.
While welcoming guests to the event,
Sugar Ray Leonard said,
“I want to say this to everyone –
together, we will one day
knock out diabetes.”
The event raised over $415,000, with
proceeds benefiting the Sugar Ray
Leonard Foundation’s mission to fund
life-changing research, awareness and
care for pediatric type 1 and 2
diabetes, and to help children live
healthier lives through diet and
exercise.
Among the other celebrity guests in
attendance, the Foundation welcomed
Sugar Ray Leonard and Bernadette
Leonard, Jimmy Jam, Judge Mathis, Mia
St. John, Michael Buffer, Oscar De La
Hoya, Sergio Mora, Shaun Robinson and
Tommy Chong among others.
The live fights presented by Oscar De La
Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions featured
some of the must-watch prospects in the
stable. In the main event, undefeated
former Mexican Olympic team member Gael
Cabrera (8-0, 5 KOs) defeated Nelvis
Rodriguez (10-3, 5 KOs) of Santa Bárbara
del Zulia, Venezuela, in a scheduled
six-round featherweight bout.
Cabrera and Rodriguez opened with
back-and-forth action, but as the fight
progressed, Cabrera overwhelmed
Rodriguez and scored a knockout at 2:59
of the first round. In the co-main
event, Kevin Piedrahita (10-3, 9 KOs) of
Las Vegas pulled off the upset of the
night over Daniel Luna (5-2, 5 KOs) of
Victorville, California.
In a scheduled six-round lightweight
bout, Piedrahita came out aggressively
at the opening bell and unleashed a
barrage of punches that Luna couldn’t
withstand, earning a first-round
knockout at 1:05.
Opening the night, Jordan Fuentes (4-0,
1 KO) of Fresno, California, secured a
stellar knockout victory over Shaileik
Paisley (4-7, 3 KOs) of Mooresville,
North Carolina, in the second round of
their scheduled
six-round super bantamweight bout.
The event took place during B. Riley
Securities’ 25th Annual Flagship
Investor Conference, a two-day premier
investment and networking event which
brings together public and private
companies with institutional investors,
high-net worth individuals, and
corporate clients, as well as select
members of the press. Conference
attendees also joined the
Charity Boxing Night.
About Sugar Ray Leonard Foundation
The Sugar Ray Leonard Foundation was
established in 2009 by boxing legend and
six-time world champion Sugar Ray
Leonard
and his wife, Bernadette.
The Sugar Ray Leonard Foundation is
committed to funding research
and care for pediatric type 1 & 2
diabetes and creates awareness for
both diseases.
The Foundation also strives to help
children live healthier lives through
diet and exercise.
Type 1 diabetes strikes both children
and adults at any age. It comes on
suddenly, causes dependence on injected
or pumped insulin for life, and carries
the constant threat of devastating
complications.
Type 2 diabetes in children is on the
rise, fueled largely by the
obesity epidemic.
Leonard draws from his personal
experience and boxing career to provide
inspiration for funding research to
combat the disease.
