Ross
Perot,
Sr. and
Congressman
Michael
McCaul
joined
HelpingaHero.org
on
Monday,
February
27th,
and
presented
the keys
to a
brand
new
CHESMAR
home to
SGT
Kendra
Coleman,
USA
(Ret.).
She is
the
FIRST
FEMALE
wounded
warrior
in Texas
to
receive
an
adapted
home.
Kendra
is a
graduate
of the
Airborne
School
and was
stationed
with the
173rd
Airborne
Brigade
in
Bamberg,
Germany.
Her
platoon
was
attached
to the
191 Cav
Scouts.
Her job
was to
train
local
police
and keep
the
village
of
Charkh
safe.
She lost
her leg
to an
improvised
explosive
device
while on
duty
clearing
a
village.
The
insurgents
hid an
IED in a
wall of
a
building
her team
was
clearing.
The
detonation
was
triggered
by a
remote
control.
Kendra
was
targeted
because
she
was a
woman
and
because
she was
blonde.
In fact,
the
insurgents
allowed
6 of her
superior
officers
to pass
safely
over the
exact
spot
where
she was
blown
up. Her
fellow
soldiers
acted
quickly
and
saved
her
life.
They
brought
her to
safety
and then
she was
evacuated
to
Landstuhl
and on
to
Walter
Reed
where
she
began
her
rehabilitation.
She has
been
stationed
at Brook
Army
Medical
Centerin
San
Antonio
for the
past 8
months
and is
excited
about
her
future.
She is
now
using a
prosthetic
leg and
she
says, "I
almost
feel
like me
again."
Now
Kendra
plans to
attend
Texas A
& M
University
and will
major in
communications.
Thanks
to H.
Ross
Perot,
Sr.,
Kendra
was able
to
travel
to
Oklahoma
and
receive
the top
prosthetic
that
enables
her to
wear
high
heels.
This
marked a
great
day in
her
recovery
and
restored
her
ability
to feel
like a
woman
again.
She was
awarded
the
Purple
Heart
for her
sacrifice
for our
freedom
and
numerous
other
medals
and
awards.
Kendra
is from
Georgia
and
recently
married
Anthony
Garza
who
hails
from
Corpus
Christie.
We are
thrilled
that
they
have
chosen
Houston
as their
new
home.
Kendra
is so
grateful
to the
community
for
partnering
with
HelpingaHero.org
to
provide
this new
home to
her.
This
beautiful
CHESMAR
home is
a 4
bedroom,
3 bath
home
featuring
a large
master
suite
and a
large
family
room.
The
oversized
yard has
a
sprinkler
system
and will
be
perfect
for
Kendra
to spend
time
with her
dogs and
in the
future
with
their
children
she
dreams
of
having.
HelpingaHero.org
is very
proud of
its
partnership
with
Spark
Energy
who has
donated
one year
of free
electricity
to
Kendra.
Gallery
Furniture
provided
an
entire
house of
furniture
for
Kendra.
Star Furniture furnished her office. And Tista’s Fine Furniture donated
the
accessories
and
really
made her
home
complete.
Rotary
District
5890,
Jonathan
Blake
LLC, Wal
Mart,
Bed Bath
and
Beyond,
Panera
Bread
and
Target
donated
items
for her
home.
And a
special
thank
you to
Dr.
Carolyn
Farb, hc
for
heading
up the
in kind
donations
for this
home!
“It is
tragic
that
insurgents
targeted
a blonde
female
soldier
just for
her
gender.
We are
so
inspired
by SGT
Kendra
Coleman
as she
is a
true
American
hero…a
fighter
who
gives
the best
of
herself
each and
every
day. She
has
battled
back
from a
near
fatal
injury
and has
endured
so much
on her
road to
recovery.
We count
it an
honor to
help
this
precious
young
hero
begin
her new
life in
a brand
new
CHESMAR
home in
Cinco
Ranch
where
her
ability
to live
independently
is
maximized.”
