"The China Story"

Opening Reception

United Nations , NYC

Yan Zhen speaking at the Opening Reception at the United Nations

Yan Zhen was born in 1930 in Laiyang in China’s Shandong Province.
Today he is a famous Chinese poet, writer, painter and calligrapher.

At the age of 15 Yan Zhen joined the Chinese liberation movement, and at the age of 24 he published his first volume of poetry.  Many of his poems were filled with both patriotism and a blend of aestheticism and romanticism and became very widely known.  He was regarded as being one of the Five Great Young Poets at the time of the establishment
of the new Chinese state.

In 1985 he was a member of the first delegation of Chinese writers who went abroad after the end of the Cultural Revolution, and visited a number of American cities, including San Francisco, New York, Chicago, Boston and Washington.  He gave speeches at Harvard University, Stanford University, Columbia University, and several other educational institutions, introducing the early phase of China’s reform and opening up movement and building a bridge of cultural exchange between China and the outside world.  After he returned to China he published a volume, Doves and Tulips, in order to open a window on America for the Chinese people who were then enthusiastically involved
in the early phase of the reform movement.

Mr. Yan Zhen’s recently published long poem, The China Dream, with his deep powers of observation, his acute sense of intellectual acuity, and his combination of political theory and the fundamental beauty of poetry significantly advances today’s sense of beauty and spirituality.  This poem has received widespread approval and positive reactions in Chinese society and on the international stage.

Up until today Mr. Yan Zhen has written over 40 personal literary works,
and the ten-volume Collected Works of Yan Zhen has also been published.

For a long time, while Mr. Yan Zhen has been working on literature he has also been painting.  He has created Chinese art works, but he has also produced many oil paintings.  His art works are different from the main-stream, and instead of pursuing life-like images of the physical world he focuses on the expression of feelings and emotions.  He combines the marvelous style of Chinese water color painting with the three dimensional realism of Western oil painting into a single form of art, and fills his art with both a sense of Western realism and Eastern mysticism.  His long poem The China Dream, and the famous oil painting he produced at the same time, The China Dream, are successful
models of this approach.

In 2008 Mr. Yan Zhen produced the three-volume work, The Paintings of the Poet Yan Zhen, which comprises almost 400 oil paintings and water color paintings that he had completed before 2008.  Mr. Yan Zhen has had a number of successful exhibitions, and his paintings have been exhibited at the China National Art Gallery in Beijing, as well as in some international galleries in New York, Washington, and other places.

If we say that the special characteristic of Yan Zhen’s poetry is both unrestrained beauty and graceful elegance, then Yan Zhen’s paintings have both profound vastness and dream-like imagination.  The difference between his paintings and the work of other artists is:  he does not seek the accurate portrayal of objects, but only emphasizes the expression of the heart and mind.  He has the unique spirit of Chinese water color painting and the ability of Western paintings to express three-dimensional images and he has integrated them into a distinct form of expression, and has filled his art with the Western sense of the contemporary and the Eastern sense of mysterious mysticism.  Mr. Yan Zhen’s long poem, The China Dream, and the oil painting,
The China Dream, were perfect models of this theme.

Mr. Yan Zhen has been invited by the General Assembly of the United Nations to mount a two-week exhibition of his paintings, named The China Story, in September 2014 during the transition from the 68th to the 69th General Assembly.
