Bob Dylan's lyrics: Sotheby's Fine Books and Manuscripts
(N.Y. Dec.10th, 2010) |
The line it is drawn
The curse it is cast
The slow one now will later be fast
As the present now
Will later be past
The order is rapidly fading
And the first one now will later be last
For the times they are a changing

Bob Dylan
left the mid-west and had two profound insights about life
from his grandmother on his mother's side who lived with
them. Dylan states in his autobiography "Bob Dylan
Chronicles" that she was filled with goodness and nobility
and told him that - happiness is the road and we must find
it every day of one's life - she told him to be kind to
everyone because everyone you'll meet along the way is
fighting a hard battle through life.
He made his way to Greenwich Village, N.Y. Here he
would meet Woody Guthrie and would be introduced to Mac and
Eve Mackenzie where at their 28th St. apartment he often
resided through 1960
and 1961. In the Village he performed at the Gaslight and
Gerde's Folk City.
When Dylan came to New York City he was not a
songwriter but performed a repertoire of traditional folk
songs. His first album, recorded in 1961 and released in
March 1962, had only two original compositions and ten folk
and blues standards. By the time of Dylan's record album,
"the Free Wheelin' Bob Dylan", the ratio of original songs
had grown to 90% Dylan songs.
In late 1963 Bob Dylan wrote the lyrics to "The Times
They Are A-Changin" and on this recent December 2010
Sotheby's N.Y. auctioned these Bob Dylan lyrics, written and
signed in pencil "by Bob Dylan" on one sheet of unruled
3-holed notebook paper.
The auctioneer, Marsha Malinowski, senior specialist of
the International Books and Manuscripts Department, began
the bidding in the low $100,000's and it rapidly rose to
$300,00 and sold for $422,500. The buyer was Adam Sender, a
hedge-fund manager.
A 30 old year master quitarist, singer and composer,
Kristofer Ambrose, accompanied me to this auction and he
considers Bob Dylan the quintessential poet and composer of
the 20th century. Kristofer has just written a profound
song about the 2010 Chilean miners' miraculous 69 days
ordeal under the earth. It's titled Esperanza "Hope" and
available on iTunes (http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/esperanza-ep/id410677531).
I was also accompanied by the brilliant 20 year old
jazz pianist, Dylan Meek, who greatly admires Bob Dylan and
with his Dylan Meek Trio performs at The Garage
Cafe and Restaurant (www.myspace.com/thedylanmeektrioquartet)
in Greenwich Village on weekends.
The existence of these Bob Dylan lyrics were brought
out after the June 2010 Sotheby's auction of the John
Lennon's lyrics to "A Day in the Life" which went for $1.2
million.* Dylan recorded it in 1963 and also performed it
at Carnegie Hall.
