Houston, TX – August 14, 2010 – On Friday, August 13,
2010,
Becoming Kinky: The World According to Kinky Friedman, a
new play by Ted Swindley, was introduced to Houston
audiences in a staged reading held at Stages Repertory
Theatre. An invited audience of over 100 laughed, clapped,
and sang along with the show. Audience reaction was
consistent in declaring Becoming Kinky a sure hit.
The staged
reading is the first in a series of steps Becoming Kinky
will go through before its planned debut. “It’s important
to get a sense of how audiences will respond to the play,”
said Swindley. “The staged reading provides valuable
feedback, and helps the playwright refine the script before
it goes into full production.” Swindley and co-producers MJ
Wilson Emig and Carolyn Farb are considering several
locations for
Becoming Kinky: The World According to Kinky
Friedman’s official debut.
Creator Ted
Swindley, founding director of Stages Repertory, has
directed and produced over 200 plays. He is internationally
known for creating the hit musical Always...Patsy Cline,
which premiered in 1990 and continues to play throughout the
world. Becoming Kinky: The World According to Kinky
Friedman celebrates
the Texas icon, Kinky Friedman who is well known throughout
the US and internationally as a singer/songwriter, author of
many books, and politician. Becoming Kinky is
based on the writings and songs of Mr. Friedman and it is
simultaneously hilarious, wise and poignant. In many ways,
this new theatrical work demonstrates that Kinky Friedman is
a Texas treasure and a modern day Will Rogers.
