David Datuna, Viewpoints of Millions, 2009, mixed media, 52
x 82 inches
The exhibition is co-curated by Kimberly Goff, Julie Keys
and
Gary Krimershmoys.
This exhibition brings together three renowned international
contemporary artists, each having roots in the post-Soviet
sphere. Since the breakdown of the USSR and the state
indoctrinated Socialist Realism movement, there has been a
flowering of a creativity and artistic energy in an area of
the world that was for decades cut off from the
international artistic process. These three artists show
cutting edge facets of the contemporary face of the
post-Soviet artistic vision.
Arsen Savadov was one of the pioneers of this new art world,
and used the energy of the chaos that resulted from
Perestroika to create a new language for Russian art. Using
classical compositions and familiar figures juxtaposed with
unusual outfits and placement to bewilder and arouse deep
wide-ranging feelings, from humour to shock.
David Datuna took the baton and kept pushing the boundaries,
reworking materials, everyday objects and symbol to create
works that captivate, but also plucks the strings of some
internal memories and emotions, with sometimes unsettling
results. Recently Datuna starred at the Art Hamptons fair,
where his Flag and Plate Series were highlights of the fair.
Oksana Mas focuses on her exploration of the spiritual and
universal, where works speak to people on a deep level that
transcends geography. She pays special attention to the
materials and the various layers that make up a painting,
all from a post-modern viewpoint.
More than distance separates America and the former Soviet
Union. The exhibition aims to show something new, unexpected
and provocative to the viewer, and to bridge the worlds of
art and further the dialogue, from the former USSR to
America.
