Family Film Awards: Wasteland

Wasteland

 The Wasteland

Criticism of "The Wasteland"

In general, Ahmad Bahrami's "The Wasteland" is an attempt to criticizing and
portraying the design of the industrial world in the age of capricornical systems
 and relations.

A hierarchical system consisting of the worker and employer, the boss and
subordinate, the master and subject.

It is an image represented from the medium of
cinema, an image that is trying to demonstrate and convey its words to the audience
from a position with cinematic grammar.

If we are to study the movie "The Wasteland" with a different perspective, we can pay
attention to the two issues of form and content.

Form:
Basically, "The Wasteland" is the movie of the form film and its director, which has
become a remarkable work of art based on the features and formal design
of the director.

The choice of any other forms could not have revealed the strengths of this
movie to such an extent. The mezzanines, the movements, and angles of the camera,
the black and white of the movie, the usage of a 4:3 view, the circular and repetitive
structure of the narration and editing, all serve the director's purpose and create and
induce semantic levels of the work to the audience.

In my opinion, there is a consistent combination between content and form in "The
Wasteland", which is reminiscent of the original and classical cinema. because in a
cinematic work we can have calculated sub-textual references and a praiseworthy
religious homage to that cinema, conveys the elegance and artistry of the director and
its producers.

"Rashomon" Kurosawa, "Bicycle Thieves" Desica, "Santango" Blatter,
were all movies that came to my mind many times while watching "The Wasteland".

The circular structure of the movie as a whirlpool with large to small diameters
plunges the viewer into a seemingly repetitive but ever deeper narration, although this
form of editing and montage is not something new to the narration, but Bahrami
skillfully brings it to the service of the story and reinforces other components
of the movie.

I must confess that one of the admirable features of "The Wasteland" is its precise
and accurate filming. Being able to achieve the right rhythm and coordination in the
static and dynamic components of filming in a cinematic work is an augmented and
powerful advantage that can multiply the effect of the movie, which is recognizable in
"The Wasteland".

The correct position of the camera as the narrator of the story has
worked so well in the formal structure and of course the content of the movie that
although it practically does not emphasize any of the characters except by the grace
of God, it does not allow removing any of them in the narrative process.

Because Lotfallah, in the semantic level of the work, is higher and more than the character we
are dealing with, and I will explain more in the "content" section.
But there are significant points on the subject of content and hermeneutic criticism.

Content:
Naturally, a work of art, based on a form, has a good platform for symbolic roles and
the use of metaphors and symbols, and "The Wasteland" is no exception to this rule.
The first is to pay attention to the component of repetition in the narrative, from
different angles of the characters, which is also a kind of ironic metaphor for
traditional and modern feudalism.

A dilemma that manifests itself well in the form of
the movie's timelessness and impossibility, and points to universal pain and
complications all over the world.

But perhaps the most prominent case is the function of the movie's two semantic
triangles, which forms this metaphorical contrast to the movie's powerful
and original driving force.

The movie introduces two triangles; the first is the brick kiln, the boss, and the workers
next to the second triangle, which is formed by Lotfatullah, the boss and the server.

For this conflict, the best trick that the director cleverly used is the position of the
camera as the narrator of this story.

A story that, for the sake of its narration, just the
character of Lotfallah equals the camera. Based on the semantic contrast of the two
triangles above, Lotfallah's character symbolizes the brick workshop.

When we put the six concepts together, the overlap of the two triangles enhances the semantic
pleasure of the movie.

Lutfullah is the same brick kiln, the servers are the symbol of the same workers who
satisfy the pleasure of the employer and the boss in a short form that after the closure
of the workshop is going to do the same thing elsewhere with a newer form
and image.

The boss and the employer are fixed in both triangles.
These two triangles and their semantic conversion to each other, based on the
predictable but influential ending of the movie, have enough power and potential to
open the language of admiration according to the process of the story.

For me, "The Wasteland" is a respectable work of art in Iranian cinema that pays
professional attention to classical cinema and neorealism in Iran and the world.

A work that, in the hype of glamorous and expensive movies, earns its respect from the
love of its creators for the art of cinema.
