3RD ANNUAL
PET HERO AWARDS
Jewel and
Robert Morris opened the gates to their magnificent
Hobby Hill Estate in Water Mill for the 3rd
Annual Pet Philanthropy Circle’s Pet Hero Awards on
Saturday, August 23rd. Opening ceremonies
commenced with the impressive “Spirit of Long Island”
synchronized equestrian performance by the Islip
Horseman’s Association Drill Team. Jewel Morris, Founder of
the Pet Philanthropy Circle and Master of Ceremonies,
introduced the first honoree, Anthony Ungaro, a
veteran soldier who is a war hero that raises funds
for the shelters across the country. Deborah Boies,
Executive Vice President of the organization and
founder of Pilots and Paws presented the award to
Dr. David T. Crouch, DVM for Outstanding
Veterinarian of the Year.
Prince Lorenzo
Borghese was named Humanitarian of the Year. Jean
Shafiroff received the Outstanding Volunteer Award.
Friends of Finn Founder and Chairwoman Amanda Hearst
and member, Georgina Bloomberg were honored for their
tireless work trying to shut down puppy mills. New York
Yankees co-owner Jerry Cohen gave the Outstanding Pet
Philanthropist of the Year Award to Andy Sabin.
Additional honorees included Tony Award Winner William
Berloni for Dog Trainer of the Year and brought his
trainee, Sandy from the Broadway show Annie. Best
Friends Animal Society of Utah was honored with
the Outstanding Animal Welfare Organization Award as
pioneers of the NO-KILL movement. Outstanding Shelter honors
were given to Pet Haven Rescue, a state of the art
cage free rescue sanctuary, Angel On A Leash founder
David Frei took home a Special Achievement Award for his
work with Southampton Hospital and Outstanding
Juniors Brittany and Ariel Lavalle were
recognized by actor Lou Wegner, Junior Ambassador of
the Pet Philanthropic Circle, for their contributions to
Last Chance Animal Rescue. Angela Fletcher
accepted an award on behalf of her canine partner “Maddy”
who received Amazing Pet of the Year.
Supporters including
Jay and Anne Hearst McInerney, Lady Liliana
Cavendish, Rosemary Ponzo, Greg Oehler and Joy Marks
mingled around Hobby Hill’s pool before the awards ceremony
took place on the beautiful brick pagoda stage.
The mission of The
Pet Philanthropy Circle (PPC) to save and enhance the
quality of animal’s lives by promoting greater public
awareness of their welfare and the causes that protect them.
PPC achieves these goals through educational programs and by
raising funds for qualified animal rescue organizations and
individuals at the annual Pet Philanthropy Awards event.
