PASADENA, CA Kidspace
Children’s Museum is a proud sponsor of the
42nd Annual City
of Pasadena Black
History Month Parade and Festival,
celebrating the life and legacy of Jackie
Robinson on Saturday, February 17 at
Robinson Park. The museum will host a family
art program at the festival designed to
illustrate Robinson’s legacy of activism and
action for civil rights.
Following the festival, the Jackie Robinson
celebration continues at Kidspace with
community art and music programs on Sunday,
February 18, and Monday, February 19 from
10:00 am to 5:00 pm.
“Our program is centered on a famous quote
from Jackie Robinson: ‘Life is not a
spectator sport.’ His work for civil rights
changed the world, but his work is not
finished,” said Lisa Clements, Kidspace CEO.
“We invite families to celebrate his legacy
through art and music, and to come together
in his memory to advocate for a better,
kinder world.”
In collaboration with Transformative
Arts,
Kidspace will host artist April
Banks to
create a large-scale community art piece
representing our commitment to continue
Robinson’s activism for freedom and civil
rights. Glenn
Ligon,
a renowned artist, critically examines race
in America through his artwork. His piece "Hands"
references the Million Man March in 1995 and
calls for action and accountability.
Inspired by Robinson's legacy and Ligon's
artwork, the community art piece will invite
participants to place their handprints in
the voided space of Ligon's work as a symbol
of their shared commitment to freedom and
civil rights.
Musician and ethnomusicologist Ray
Briggs, Ph.D. will
share the songs from Robinson’s time and the
cultural significance of the “Black National
Anthem.” Musical programs will be shared in
the Stonehollow Amphitheater on Sunday,
February 18, and Monday, February 19 at
11:15 am and 1:15 pm.
The Black History Month Celebration is
included with admission. For more
