It is an extraordinary honor to present An Gorta Mór –
Ireland’s
Great Hunger. And I am sure that you, too, won't think of
this
tragedy in the same way after experiencing this exhibition.
Opening the exhibition, President Mary McAleese noted that
Ireland’s Great Hunger reframes the history of the period,
revealing the true causes of massive Irish emigration in the
19th
century, and questioning the way we view hunger
in our own world.
Ireland’s Great Hunger captures art and history: it offers
an
urgent message, a new perspective, a remembrance.
Curated from the remarkable collection at Quinnipiac
University in
Hamden, Connecticut, the exhibition contains art work by
major
contemporary sculptors, as well as paintings, lithographs,
photographs and etchings, and a fascinating selection of
rare
books and maps, dating from the famine years and earlier.
The exhibition runs through September 3rd.
I hope you will visit us. We look forward to welcoming you.
Best regards,
Turlough McConnell
Curator and Producer
