Since 1982, the
Brain
Injury Association of New York State (BIANYS)
has provided education, advocacy, and community
support services that lead to improved outcomes for
children and adults with brain injuries and their
families. Every 23 seconds, another person in the
United States sustains a brain injury. The Centers
for Disease Control estimates that at least 3.2
million Americans are currently living with long
term disabilities from a traumatic brain injury. In
fact, traumatic brain injury is the “signature
injury” of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan,
impacting at least one in five of the military
personnel involved in these wars.
In
collaboration with the
New
York State Department of Health,
BIANYS
seeks to raise awareness about traumatic brain
injury, and to be a resource to providers and
families as they seek to understand the symptoms of
and treatment for TBI. Through its Traumatic Brain
Injury Training and Military Veterans Services
Project,
BIANYS
provides information and support to military
personnel returning to New York State from Iraq and
Afghanistan and their families. In addition,
BIANYS
offers training about TBI to civilian and military
service providers.
