WHO/WHAT:
How much is a camera worth? In the hands of a struggling
young person, it might be priceless. At the 2010 “Picture My
World” exhibit opening, the images taken by 24 amateur
photographers will be on display, illustrating their
concerns about the environment, nature and their power – or
lack of power – to do something about current changes.
This is the 14th
year of the exhibit that showcases the talents of local
students, under the guidance of Denise Felice, director of
education for the Palm Beach Photographic Centre. “Picture
My World” provides several outreach programs each year for
disadvantaged children in the community.
The annual
exhibit will include about 70-75 photographs, accompanied by
journal entries, from the two groups currently taking part
in the program. They include students from the South Olive
Community Center in West Palm Beach and Place of Hope, a foster care community
in Palm Beach
Gardens. The first group is
elementary students ages 8-12, the other consists of teens
ages 13-18.
This is the first
year for Place of Hope’s participation; about 10 children
participated in the photo class. Classes are held after
school each Friday for two hours, and students go on
Saturday field trips about twice a month. Students use
digital cameras, donated by Canon USA, and
periodically have access to a digital darkroom at the
Centre’s main location. Felice visited the POH campus and
took the youth on field trips with some of their house
parents.
Place of Hope,
one of the largest family-style child welfare organizations
in Florida, provides emergency and long-term family-style
foster care, family outreach and intervention, transitional
housing and support services, adoption and foster care
recruitment and support, and hope and healing opportunities
for children and families who have been traumatized by abuse
and neglect.
