For 25 years, The
Education Fund has supported Miami-Dade public
schools by directing resources from the private
sector into the school system. With recent
budget cuts to the district estimated at $1.13
billion, school art programs are increasingly
under-funded and in danger of being cut. To
fundraise in support of local art teachers and
their students, the organization, along with
Ocean Bank, hosts an annual charity auction
called “The Art of Found Objects.”
This auction is
the most extraordinary arts and education event
of the season, showcasing more than 200
one-of-a-kind pieces of quality artwork created
by students and teachers from 50 Miami-Dade
County’s K-12 public schools. This art lover’s
event features bids on the works and additional
luxury items. Live entertainment will be
provided by students from
New World School
of the Arts.
Student chefs from
Robert Morgan
High School,
an award-winning culinary arts magnet school,
will partner with
celebrity chefs
Cindy Hutson
of Ortanique,
Clay Conley
of Azul and
Ken Lyons
of Fratelli Lyon to provide an epicurean feast
for the guests. Open bar is sponsored by
Bacardi.
“This auction
will showcase the tremendous imagination of our
public school teachers and their students. It is
an example of what can be done creatively with
recycled, “found objects,” said Linda Lecht,
President of The Education Fund. It is so
important that we support arts education in our
public schools. Many of our community’s top
collectors recognize this fact and participate
in this wonderful event,” she added.
The auction is a
popular event attended by more than 400 of South
Florida’s business, art and community leaders.
Many local art collectors attend the event each
year including: philanthropist R. Kirk Landon;
Myrna and Sheldon Palley, whose world-class
glass art collection is on display at the Lowe
Art Museum; Carol Damian of the Frost Art
Museum; art collector and board member of South
Florida Arts Center Merle Weiss and
philanthropists and art collectors Sanford and
Dolores Ziff.
Major sponsors
include: DACRA, Whole Foods, Bacardi, Ocean
Bank, The Children’s Trust, The R. Kirk Landon
Foundation and Social Affairs Magazine.
