SPEAKER: L. HUNTER LOVINS
L.
Hunter Lovins is President and founder of the
Natural Capitalism Solutions (NCS) (www.natcapsolutions.org).
NCS educates senior decision-makers in
business, government and civil society to
restore and enhance the natural and human
capital while increasing prosperity and quality
of life. In partnership with leading thinkers
and Implementers, NCS creates innovative,
practical tools and strategies to enable
companies, communities, and countries to become
more sustainable.
Trained
as a sociologist and lawyer (JD), Hunter
co-founded the California Conservation Project
(Tree People), and Rocky Mountain Institute,
which she led for 20 years.
Lovins
has consulted for scores of industries and
governments worldwide. She has consulted with
large and small companies including the
International Finance Corporation, Royal Dutch
Shell, Interface, Clif Bar, and Wal-Mart.
Governmental clients include the Pentagon, U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency, Department of
Energy and other agencies, numerous cities, and
the governments of Jamaica, Australia, and the
U.S. She has also served an advisor to the
Energy Minister of the Government of
Afghanistan.
Recipient of such honors as the Right Livelihood
Award, Lindbergh Award and Leadership in
Business, she was named Time Magazine 2000 Hero
of the Planet and in 2009 Newsweek dubbed her a
“Green Business Icon.” She has co-authored nine
books and hundreds of papers, including the 1999
book, Natural Capitalism, 2006 e-book Climate
Protection Manual for Cities, and the 2009
Transforming Industry in Asia. She has served on
the boards of governments, non- and for profit
companies.
Hunter’s
areas of expertise include Natural Capitalism,
sustainable development, globalization, energy
and resource policy, economic development,
climate change, land management, and fire rescue
and emergency medicine. She developed the
Economic Renewal Project and helped write many
of its manuals on sustainable community economic
development. She was a founding Professor of
Business at Presidio Graduate School, one of the
first accredited programs offering an MBA in
Sustainable Management and is currently Chief
Insurgent of the madrone project (more
information coming).

Co-founder
and Managing Partner of IGNIA Partners, LLC,
a US$102 million impact investing venture
capital firm based in Monterrey, Mexico,
focused on investing in and developing
commercial enterprises serving the base of
the socio-economic pyramid.
Chairman of the Board of Compartamos Banco,
Americas largest microfinance organization (BMV:
COMPART, www.compartamos.com).
Former Chairman of the Board of ACCION
International (www.accion.org) and former
Chairman of the Board of Unidos Lo
Lograremos, AC (www.unidos.com.mx). He is
also a Board Member of Harvard University’s
David Rockefeller Center for Latin American
Studies; Banamex, Mexico (Advisory Board),
World Microfinance Forum of Geneva, MetroNet/Xertix
(Mexico), and a mentor of Endeavor Global.
Former Chief Financial Officer of Vitro
(NYSE: VTO and BMV: VITRO), one of the
largest glass manufacturers in the world.
Prior to joining Vitro, he served as Chief
Executive Officer of Farmacias Benavides (BMV:
BEVIDES), the largest drugstore chain in
Latin America. From 1999 to 2002 he served
as Chief Financial Officer of Grupo Salinas’
retail arm, Elektra (NYSE: EKT and BMV:
ELEKTRA) where he was part of the team that
created Banco Azteca. He holds an MBA from
Harvard Business School and a BS in
Economics from the Instituto Tecnológico
Autónomo de México (ITAM).
In
2005 Alvaro was named Young Global Leader (YGL)
by the World Economic Forum (WEF) for his
accomplishments and his commitment to shape
a better World. In 2008 he was invited as a
member of the WEF’s Global Agenda Council
and in 2009 to the WEF’s Global Redesign
Project. He is a member of the Young
Presidents Organization (YPO), Monterrey
chapter. In addition, the magazine América
Economía, in their 20th Anniversary issue,
named him as one of 10 “Leaders of the
Future” in Latin America. Rodríguez is a Pan
American (1991) and Central American (1990)
rowing medalist and was eighth in the
World University Games (1989).

SUSTAINABLE HAITI CONFERENCE, a ’conference
within a conference’ at SVC/SE- Miami, is
the largest economic development conference
ever assembled for Haiti. In March 2010,
over 100 speakers from around the world
convened at the Miami Beach Convention
Center in order to design and build a
sustainable Haiti.
For
2011, close to 500 participants are
expected including more than 120 speakers
from around the world.
