155 Varick Street
New York, NY – Israel’s most popular band HaDag Nahash
will perform at City Winery, located at 155 Varick Street,
at 8 p.m. on May 9
(Lag B’Omer). Doors open at 6 p.m. and the proceeds from
this concert – made possible by a unique partnership – will
benefit Woman to Woman, The Jerusalem Shelter for Battered
Women.
The initiative was spearhead by New York teenager Sophie
Tulkoff, a student at SAR high school, in Riverdale, who
reached out to David Azulay of Teev Productions – a
representative for Hadag Nahash – with the idea of planning
a fundraiser for the Shelter for her High School Senior
Exploration Project.
“David Azulay and Hadag Nahash were immediately forthcoming
in their guidance and continued assistance in making this a
reality,” said Tulkoff. “The generous response of the larger
New York community to this event is simultaneously exciting
and humbling.”
Booming out of Jerusalem in 1996, Hadag Nahash quickly
garnered widespread respect as the most popular band to
originate in Israel. Its music combines hip-hop, rock,
reggae and funk, and serves as a melting pot of grooves with
a distinct Middle Eastern flavor.
Early in their career, Hadag Nahash managed to walk the fine
line between popularity and social agenda, belting out songs
that promote equality and civil rights, and highlight a
systemic struggle against violence, racism and corruption.
This unique perspective has made them the center of
international and local attention, as well as a natural
musical match for Woman to Woman’s efforts to empower
victims of abuse.
“As a native Jerusalem band, it’s extra special for Hadag
Nahash to be adding its voice to a campaign to raise support
for the Jerusalem Shelter,” said Sha’anan Streett, lead
singer of Hadag Nahash, who feels very strongly about
participating in this special event. “Sadly, in Israel too,
the phenomenon of domestic violence has not been eradicated,
but luckily organizations like Woman to Woman exist. This
amazing enterprise deserves all the support it can get.”
Woman to Woman, established in 1981, has
proven to be a leading voice in the struggle against
domestic abuse in Israel. Since opening its doors, the
Jerusalem Shelter has helped many hundreds of women and
thousands of children, from all races, religions and social
classes, escape the cycle of violence and begin a new life.
The professionally staffed Shelter is a safe haven for
battered women and their children, where all programs are
aimed at offering them an alternative to a life marred by
violence. Its adjunct Halfway House can also house up to 30
women and 60 children at any given time. In addition to
practical assistance, women receive therapeutic counseling
to increase self-esteem, improve life skills and work
proficiency, enhance parenting, and encourage
self-sufficiency.
This event is evidence of Woman to Woman and Hadag Nahash’s
commitment to joining forces to raise the necessary
awareness and funds to help those who have suffered to get
on the right track to a normal and successful life.
“Sophie Tulkoff’s spirit and actions have given the
Shelter’s women and children a new reason to hope,” noted
Miri Benshalom Dor, director of the Jerusalem Shelter. “It
is so heartwarming that young people care about such issues
and are doing what they can to make a difference. I am
looking forward to attending the event in New York and
personally thanking Sophie and the supportive community
members.”
