NOBEL LAUREATE SCIENTIST
TO MEET ICA DONORS
Israel Cancer
Association USA is pleased to have distinguished Nobel
Laureate Dr. Aaron Ciechanover, an ICA funded researcher,
appear in Palm Beach for scientific presentations on January
6th and 7th. Dr. Ciechanover will address private gatherings
of ICA USA donors on the topic of ‘Cancer therapy and
personalized medicine – there is hope at the end of the
tunnel’. The events are by invitation only, with a minimum
gift toward cancer
research fellowships.
Dr. Aaron Ciechanover, along with Avram Hershko and Irwin
Rose, were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2004 for
their findings regarding ubiquitin-mediated protein
degradation. The research led to the creation of therapies
for HPV-induced uterine cervical carcinoma, which has had a
global impact on the health of young women.
Some years ago as a young researcher and physician,
Dr. Ciechanover received research fellowships from Israel
Cancer Association and learned up close about the
significant work that the Association does in promoting
research, prevention, early detection, and improving
modalities for patients. He also realized that research is
inextricably bound with understanding the disease and is
potentially life-saving.
Dr. Ciechanover was
born in Haifa, a year before the establishment of the State
of Israel. He earned his master’s degree in science in 1971
and graduated from Hadassah Medical School at The Hebrew
University in 1973. Ciechanover received his doctorate in
biochemistry in 1982 from Technion, where he now serves as a
Technion Distinguished Research Professor in the Ruth and
Bruce Rappaport Faculty of Medicine and Research Institute.
He is a member of the Israel Academy of Sciences and
Humanities, the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, and is a
foreign associate of the United States National Academy of
Sciences. Dr. Ciechanover also serves as ICA’s Honorary
President.
