Artist

of The Estée Lauder Companies, and Celebrated
Designers and Entrepreneurs Joyce And Maya Romanoff

NEW YORK, NY - On Tuesday, November 27, the Museum of Arts
and Design (MAD) will host its 2012 Visionaries! Gala,
celebrating four individuals - titans of creativity,
standard bearers in the luxury, fragrance, and design
industries, whose work personifies the Museum's mission to
examine contemporary creativity across all media:
Sophia Grojsman of International Flavors & Fragrances Inc. (IFF)
- a legendary perfumer who has created some of the most
classic and iconic fragrances in the world.
Karyn Khoury of The Estée Lauder Companies - one of the most
influential and indelible fragrance developers of our time.
Joyce and Maya Romanoff of the Maya Romanoff Corporation -
celebrated designers and entrepreneurs and leaders of
innovative wall coverings and surfacing materials that bring
great design into our daily lives.
The Visionaries! Awards recognize leaders in the worlds of
business, arts, philanthropy and creativity. The Gala's
theme is Scent in honor of MAD's upcoming exhibition, The
Art of Scent, the first museum exhibition to explore the
design and aesthetics of olfactory art, opening at MAD in
November.
"The far-reaching explorations of this year's awardees
exemplifies MAD's exploration of the world of design across
all media and demonstrates how vital design is to every
aspect of our lives," said Holly Hotchner, the Museum's
Nanette L. Laitman Director. "These four individuals are an
inspiration to us all, leaders in their varied fields, and
the impact of their work touches the daily lives of their
consumers and the experiences of museum visitors in myriad
ways."
Held this year at the Mandarin Oriental, Visionaries! will
begin with a cocktail reception and silent auction featuring
work by artists who have been represented in recent
exhibitions at the Museum, as well as special scent-themed
items, luxury goods, design items, travel getaways, and
dining packages. A special "scent dinner," led by MAD's
curator of olfactory arts, Chandler Burr, encompassing
parallel olfactory and delectable dining experiences, and
awards presentation, will follow.
The Art of Scent, 1889-2012, is the first museum exhibition
dedicated to exploring the design and aesthetics of
olfactory artthrough twelve pivotal fragrances that
profoundly impacted the course of the medium. On view
November 13, 2012, through February 24, 2013, at the Museum
of Arts and Design, the exhibitionwill examine major
stylistic developments in the evolution and design of
fragrance, and provide unprecedented insight into the
creative visions and intricate processes of the artists
responsible for crafting the featured works. The scents will
be experienced individually in a special installation
designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro that emphasizes the
distinct combination of artistry and chemistry entailed in
their creation.
This innovative exhibition will serve as a backdrop for the
2012 Visionaries! Awards, where both Sophia Grojsman and IFF,
as well as Karyn Khoury and The Estée Lauder Companies, are
featured as artists, lenders, and exhibition sponsors.
Grojsman is the artist who created Trésor (1990), one of the
scents featured in the exhibition, and IFF is one of the
major donors. The Estée Lauder Companies Inc. is the
Founding Major Donor for the exhibition and the department
of olfactory art, and has generously lent two of their
celebrated fragrances, Aromatics Elixir (1971) and Pleasures
(1995).
Joyce and Maya Romanoff are noted in the industry for their
boundless creativity and enduring success as entrepreneurs.
"Maya and Joyce's love of beauty is equaled only by the
never-ending pursuit of quality in their production, and the
integrity of their relationships with designers, craftsmen,
and philanthropic institutions," said MAD's chief curator
David McFadden. "They are respected and esteemed members of
the MAD family and the Museum is thrilled to recognize their
ongoing efforts to sustain the rich history of American
artisan-made products."
The Visionaries! Gala is the Museum's most important annual
fundraiser supporting MAD's exhibitions and educational
programs. Proceeds are directed to the support of MAD's arts
education program. This year we expect to serve nearly
10,000 children, grades K-12, and from mostly underserved
communities. Each year, more than 500 guests, including arts
patrons, artists, designers and noted corporate and civic
leaders, attend the event.
