THE MUNICIPAL ART SOCIETY HONORS
JOAN GANZ COONEY AND PETE PETERSON AT
On Thursday April
19, 2012 at 7:00 p.m., The Municipal Art Society of New York
will present the 2012 Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Medal to
Joan Ganz Cooney and Peter G. Peterson at its annual
fundraising gala. The event, to be held at The New York
Public Library, will honor this couple for their individual
contributions to New York’s cultural life, their ongoing
celebration of New York’s urban life and the role they have
played in making New York a global capital of finance and
education.
As one of the visionaries and the chief moving force behind
the creation of Sesame Workshop, Mrs. Cooney created the
vibrant and diverse environment of Sesame Street, using the
educational power of media to help children in New York and
around the entire globe. Mr. Peterson has contributed his
leadership and resources to the institutions that define New
York as “the global city” – including the Council on Foreign
Relations, The Museum of Modern Art, the Japan Society and
the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. He is the
founder and chairman of the Peter G. Peterson Foundation and
co-founded The Blackstone Group.
The Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Award—The Municipal Art
Society’s highest honor is presented annually to those who
have made outstanding contributions to the quality of life
in New York City. The medal was named for Mrs. Onassis in
1994 in honor of her tireless efforts to preserve and
protect New York’s great architecture.
