WHY: New
York City Mission Society, founded in 1812, is one of the
oldest social service agencies in the country. For
more than 200 years, they have been helping New York City
children, youth, and families break the cycle of poverty to
create a cycle of success for generations to come through
comprehensive programs that focus on the areas of education,
workforce development, prevention, youth development and
community building.
New York City Mission Society owns and operates Minisink
Townhouse, a community center in Central Harlem; where programs
promote academic enrichment, work experience, positive youth
development and healthy family relationships. In
addition, the organization partners with 9 public schools
year round, including summer and holidays, in Manhattan,
Brooklyn and the Bronx to provide academic support and
enrichment programs.
On March
12, 2014, New York City Mission Society will hold the
2014 Champions for Children Gala at
The Plaza. This
year, they will honor Jean Shafiroff, esteemed
philanthropist, humanitarian, and tireless advocate for
social services in New York with the Dina
Merrill Hartley Public Service Award. Goldman
Sachs Partner, Valentino D. Carlotti, will be honored with
the Champions
for Children Award for
his leadership and generous support of youth organizations.
In addition, those who founded the Sisulu-Walker Charter
School of Harlem, New York State’s first charter school will
receive the Community
Service Award.
