THE NYCLU AND ACLU TO HOST 16TH ANNUAL
BROADWAY STANDS UP FOR FREEDOM CONCERT WE
THE PEOPLE
Alan Cumming to Receive 2018 Freedom Award; Aasif
Mandvi to Host
WHAT:
The NYCLU (New York Civil Liberties Union)
hosts its Annual Broadway Stands Up For Freedom concert We
the People, with Alan Cumming to receive the 2018
“Freedom Award” for his contributions as an artist and
activist for human rights.
On Monday, October 15, 2018, the NYCLU and
the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) will host a
star-studded lineup for Broadway Stands Up for Freedom. This iconic
concert was created 16 years ago by aspiring musical theater
actors to celebrate the power and beauty of free expression.
This year’s theme We the People, was chosen to
represent the ACLU and the NYCLU’s goal of bringing people
together to take on the toughest civil liberties challenges
of our time.
This year’s host for the evening is
British-American actor, comedian, and former Daily Show correspondent Aasif
Mandvi. Aasif Mandvi received an OBIE Award for his
critically acclaimed one-man show Sakina's Restaurant,
and he was nominated for a Lucille Lortel Award for his
performance in the Pulitzer Prize-winning play Disgraced at
Lincoln Center. He also serves as an actor/writer/producer
on HBO's The Brink.
This year’s show will feature both existing
Broadway tunes and brand-new songs written exclusively for
the concert. The talented group of performers and
songwriters include Shaina Taub, hot off a run of the
Public Theater’s Twelfth Night, and Erich Bergen,
noted for his roles in “Madam Secretary,” Waitress,
and Jersey Boys.
Proceeds from the show will benefit the mission of the NYCLU
and ACLU to promote and protect the civil rights and
liberties of all.
The NYCLU is also holding a song contest,
inviting submissions for original songs that speak out
against racism, hatred, and bigotry. The winner will receive
a VIP ticket to the concert, a one-year membership to the
ACLU and NYCLU, and a cash prize.
