Celebrate Incredible Individuals and an
Organization
That Make Aging Better |
|
With less than 2% of funds from the nations
largest grant makers focused on charity serving aging adults
and 25% of adults age 65 and older admitting to social
isolation, Lifeforce in Later Years aims to bridge this gap
by
operating
a nationally recognized model to help seniors age safely in
their homes with access to volunteers who help them with
basic but critical needs as well as companionship and
cheer.
LiLY,
achieves its mission by coordinating and directing a net
work of caring volunteers in community resources toward the
help of elderly seniors or committed to aging in the homes
they love. |
|
On November 6, Lifeforce in Later Years he
affectionately known as
LiLY,
will be holding its 12th
LiLY,
legacies gala at the Columbia University Low Library Rotunda.
Each year, they look forward to
celebrating
three exceptional New Yorkers who make aging in
New York better. |
|
This year's gala will honor three exceptional individuals;
Rachael Ray, American cooking and TV icon, business woman
extraordinaire and philanthropist; Dr. Richard Mayeaux,
Neurologist-in-Chief at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia
University Medical Center and Dr. Rafael Lantigua,
Director,
Office Of Community Service Programs and Professor
of Medicine, Columbia University Vagelis College of
Physicians and Surgeons. |
|
LiLY was
founded in 2009 by Zola, after witnessing the limitations of
the care available to her mother who lived in a nursing home
facility, Zola brought a group of neighbors together to
consider how they might help their neighbors remain in their
own apartments, even at advanced ages. Soon after launching
a friendly visiting program, the volunteer-led group saw
that a majority of neighbors over 80 years had no family
caregiver options and that emotional, social, and community
connections were invaluable to improving the quality of
living alone in the city. Over time, individualized and
deep-levels of care were complemented by social group
programs and expansion into new neighborhoods. There are no
fees for LiLY
programs; rather, a committed
group of staff, volunteers, local businesses, and medical
partners who contribute to the work. |
|
This year’s event features the nation’s wildly popular cook,
and television personality, Rachael Ray. Ray will be
celebrated for her impact on the quality of life at home and
for her expansive humanitarian initiatives. Because of Ray,
nutritious home-cooked meals are again emblematic of home
life; numerous generations are empowered with the know-how
and inspiration to enjoy cooking with their own families.
Rachael Ray’s philanthropy extends beyond cooking to
emergency food, shelter and needs response. |
|
Among our three honorees, this year, two of them are
pre-eminent neurologists working at the forefront of
Alzheimer's research and treatment, and aging: |
|
Dr. Richard P. Mayeaux, Neurologist-in-Chief at New
York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center. |
|
Dr. Rafael Lantigua, Director, Office of Community Service
Programs and Professor of Medicine, Columbia University
Vagelos College od Physicians and Surgeons. |
|
This year is especially challenging for the LiLY
organization as we lost our founder Irene Zola unexpectedly
in August, after an illness. There will be a warm
tribute to her life and LiLY, at the event. |

ABOUT Life Force in Later Years (LiLY)
Lifeforce in Later Years is a 501 ( c ) 3 nonprofit charity
that is committed to serving the needs and interests of
elderly seniors who have chosen to age in the homes they
love. LiLY maintains this mission by applying a network of
caring volunteers and community resources towards the health
of elderly seniors. Proceeds of the gala and affiliated
donations are used to fund the social workers of LiLY’s
neighborhoods and programs. LiLY aims to expand into more
neighborhoods with chapters they call “villages.” This no
fee for seniors model has been recognized by many, and the
organization and the founder has been the recipient of the
CNN hero
