Ralph Cancro, Ph.D, 81,
of Bronxville, NY, died on January 12, 2010. Beloved husband
of Marcella (Rosignoli) Cancro. Loving father of
Lawrence (Luise) Cancro, Barbara (Frank) Carr, Susan
Brown, and Lorraine Cancro. Dear brother of Robert Cancro,
MD. Cherished grandfather of Laura Marie Cancro, Lisa
Cancro, Andrew Carr, Cristina Carr, and Emma
Brown. Dr. Cancro served as a member of the US Army Air
Corps during WWII, having served in the Air Transport
Command, before obtaining a B.S., M.A.,
and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at Columbia University, NY, NY.
He practiced in this area of
psychology for fifty three years. At the
Burke
Rehabilitation Hospital in White Plains, N.Y. he served as Director of Psychological
Services for 23 years and as Co-Director of Mental
Health Services. While at the
Burke
Rehabilitation Hospital, in addition to clinical and
supervisory responsibilities, he initiated and
participated in research projects, lectured in seminars,
and conducted workshops at colleges and universities in
the tri-state area. Following his tenure at the Burke Rehabilitation Hospital, he was an attending psychologist at St. Agnes Hospital and Medical
Center in White Plains, New
York, and later at the
Westchester Medical Center, NY. He also had an active
private practice for over 50 years. The rank of
Professor Emeritus in Psychology was conferred by Marymount College in Tarrytown,
New York, where he taught Psychology for 25
years and Chaired the Department of Psychology and was
Director of the
Counseling
Center for many years.
His professional affiliations
include the American Psychological Association, the
Westchester Psychological Association, the American
Association
for the Advancement of Science, the National Honorary
Society in Psychology, and the Association of
Rehabilitation Facilities of New York State, an
organization in which he served as President in
1965-1966.
Dr. Cancro’s published and
unpublished papers range from Psychological Disabilities
of Cerebral Palsy, Psychotherapeutic Approaches in
Cerebral Palsy, Learning Disabilities, to Laterality of
Brain Lesion and Intellectual Dysfunction.
Visitation was held at
the WESTCHESTER FUNERAL HOME, INC,
Eastchester, on Thursday Jan. 14, 2010, from 2-4 & 6-8PM.
Funeral Mass, Immaculate Conception Church, Tuckahoe, Friday, Jan. 15, 2010 at
10:30AM followed by entombment at the Gate of Heaven
Cemetery, Hawthorne, NY. In lieu of flowers, the family is
requesting that donations be made in Dr. Cancro’s
