Celebrates
His Birthday
and Derek
Jeter Day
at Yankee Stadium

Sunday,
September 7,
2014
was officially
declared
Derek Jeter
Day by New
York City
Mayor Bill
de Blasio.
Not only was
it a very
special day
for Derek
Jeter, the
NY Yankees
and their
fans but it
was a very
special day
for my
father, Ken
Herbert, who
traveled
from
Pennsylvania
to celebrate
his 82nd
birthday
with his
family.
Reggie
Jackson
and Ken
Herbert
Yankee
Stadium was
sold out
with nearly
50,000
cheering
fans. Many
of them
wearing
various
forms of
Derek Jeter
attire and
carrying
signs
expressing
their love
and
gratitude to
Jeter. All
of the flags
around the
top of the
stadium were
white with #
2
prominently
displayed
and waving
in the wind,
in honor of
"The
Captain."
|
|
|
The
celebration
honoring
Jeter's
retirement
began at
11 am,
one hour
before
game
time.
The sun
was
shining
and a
soft
breeze
blew.
The
setting
could
not have
been
more
perfect
for a
moment
that
will be
remembered
and
spoken
of for
many
life
times to
come.

Derek
Jeter's
grandmother,
parents
and
sister
were the
first
people
to walk
onto the
field
and take
their
seats on
the
perfectly
aligned
white
chairs.
Jeter
has
always
shown
his
appreciation
for his
family
and this
was
another
way to
honor
them.
The
celebrity
list
that
followed
left me
in awe.
Commissioner

Famer'
Reggie

Joe

Cal.
Ripken,

others.
George
Steinbrenner's
family
and
daughter
Jenny
showed
their
love and
support.
Derek's
Turn2
Foundation's
2014
graduating
class
walked
single
file
across
the
field in
show of
appreciation
for all
of his
help.
Michael
Jordan
received
a
standing
ovation
when his
name was
announced.
The
crowd
roared
throughout
the
celebration.
I was
honored
to have
my
loving
father
at
my side
in the
Owner's
Suite
during
the
game.
My fiancé
Barry
Klarberg
helped
me
arrange
a special
surprise.
During
the 5th
and 6th
innings
"Happy
Birthday
Ken
'Pappy'
Herbert"
was
prominently
displayed
on
Yankee
Stadium's
largest
marquee.
The
announcer
also
said it
on the
stadium
speaker.
My
father
was
shocked.
I can
still
see the
astonished
look and
big
smile on
his
face. He
turned
to me
and
said,
"Did
they say
my
name?" I
replied,
"Not
only did
they say
your
name,
dad,
look at
the
marquee."
He
could
not
believe
his
eyes...or
ears! It
was an
amazing
moment
that I
will
always
cherish.

I can't
think of
a better
way to
have
honored
my
father
in
celebration
of his
birthday
and know
that he
felt the
love
from me
and his
grandchildren,
Justin
and
Alana.
Barry's
family
joined
us in
the
celebration,
making
it even
more
special.
Derek
Jeter's
fans
also
showed
him
their
love
with a
tremendous
out
pouring
of
cheers,
gifts
and
standing
ovations.
The
speeches
brought
tears to
the eyes
of many
of us.
Jeter
was very
moved.
The
usually
reserved
Derek
could
not help
but
smile
throughout
the
first
few
innings
of his
legendary
day. Unfortunately,
The NY
Yankees
didn't
win
against
the
Kansas
City
Royals,
the
score
was 2-0,
but as
far as I
am
concerned,
we were
all
winners
that
day. It
was an
honor to
be a
part of
history
and to
be in
the
presence
of so
many
great
people.

My dad
was
thrilled
to meet
and talk
with
Reggie
Jackson,
who is
also
from
Pennsylvania
and a
Steeler
fan.
Jenny
Steinbrenner
couldn't
have
been
kinder
when she
spoke
with my
father.
|
Dad,
I hope you
always feel
our love and
know how
much
we
cherish
and love
you.
|
Happy
Birthday!!!! |
