New York, NY
- On April 29, alumnae and friends of Barnard College gathered
at Guastavino's, one of New York City's architectural landmarks,
for its annual Scholarship Dinner and Auction. This year honored
recently retired professor of political science
Dennis Dalton, Vice Chair of the Barnard
College Board of Trustees
Jolyne Caruso-FitzGerald '81, and Barnard Trustee
Emerita and Chair Emerita
Helene L. Kaplan '53. ABC News correspondent
Deborah Roberts
served as Mistress of Ceremonies at the event, titled
Pass the Torch, and
all proceeds benefit the College's financial aid program.
More than 500 guests
attended, including multimedia entrepreneur and
television personality
Martha Stewart'63, brought five of
her employees and fellow Barnard alums. Other notable
guests included
Newsweek
columnist and bestselling author
Anna Quindlen '74;
founding editor of
CosmoGIRL! and former editor-in-chief of
Seventeen
Atoosa Rubenstein '93;
philanthropists
Cheryl Milstein '82 and Philip Milstein; and
Lisa Cohen '81 and
James Cohen, president and CEO of Hudson
Media.
"The Scholarship Dinner
brings together Barnard's alumnae, faculty, parents, and
friends for an evening that celebrates and supports the
College's mission of educating exceptional young women,"
said Barnard
President Debora Spar, who assumed leadership
of the College in July 2008. "With the difficult
economic situation facing families of all income levels
today, the financial aid program is more important than
ever. We are grateful that our alumnae and friends have
responded with such remarkable generosity." Barnard's
financial aid department saw a noticeable increase in
requests for additional assistance during the 2008-2009
academic year.
The Scholarship Dinner
featured live and silent auctions, as well as an online
auction to run through May 7. Some of the most highly
anticipated auction items include the chance to play in
a doubles match with tennis greats
Andre Agassi
and Justin Gimelstob
at The Kennedy Funding Invitational, and the opportunity
to name a character in
Robert Ludlum's
Bourne Identity book series. Other
exciting items are dinner with Barnard parents
Chevy, the legendary
comedian, and Jayni Chase, lunch and a tour
of the WB Studios with
Donald DeLine,
producer of I Love
You, Man and
The Italian Job,
and the opportunity to meet
Martha Stewart
at a taping of The
Martha Stewart Show.
Honorees were:
Helene L. Kaplan '53, Chair Emerita and
Trustee Emerita, and
Jolyne Caruso-FitzGerald '81, Vice Chair of
the Board of Trustees, will both receive the Frederick
A.P. Barnard Award, one of the College's highest honors.
Honoree Dennis Dalton,
retired political science professor and renowned scholar
of nonviolent political theory, will receive the
Margaret Mead Award, named for the famed cultural
anthropologist and Class of 1923 graduate.
Throughout her years of
service as a member of the Barnard Board of Trustees
from 1973 until 1999 and beyond,
Kaplan has
shown remarkable dedication and creativity in her
commitment to mentoring women. In 1990, Kaplan and her
husband, Mark, established Barnard's first endowed chair
in the physical and natural sciences. In 1993, Kaplan's
friends and family established the Helene L. Kaplan '53
Scholarship Fund in her honor. Additionally, she
co-chaired the search committee that appointed President
Spar last year.
Elected to the Board of
Trustees in 2000,
Caruso-FitzGerald has worked tirelessly as a
member of numerous committees and has been instrumental
in all stages of planning for the Nexus, Barnard's new
state-of-the-art campus center that will open at the end
of 2009. Motivated by her beliefs in the power of a
Barnard education and a community dedicated to the
advancement of women, Caruso-FitzGerald has used her
fine-tuned leadership skills to establish and grow
Barnard's Annual Scholarship Dinner and Auction, giving
generously to financial aid herself, and serving as
co-chair of the event since 2005.
Honoree
Dennis Dalton
taught political science for nearly forty years at
Barnard
College
and retired at the end of December 2008. Professor
Dalton's legacy lives among the Barnard women for whom
he became a mentor, friend, and role model through his
popular classes in political science and participation
in on-campus events featuring topics of nonviolence. An
expert in South-Asian political thought, Professor
Dalton's research, teaching, and publications have
received much recognition, including a Fulbright
Scholarship to support his work in Nepal.
At Barnard, Professor Dalton received rave course
evaluations from students and many teaching and research
awards.
About
Barnard
College
The idea was bold for
its time. Founded in 1889, Barnard was the only college
in New York City,
and one of the few in the nation, where women could
receive the same rigorous and challenging education
available to men. Today, Barnard is among the strongest
liberal arts colleges in the country, and the most
sought-after women's college.
