CITYarts’ Pieces for Peace Book Launch and
Exhibition
with Youth from Around the World
at the United Nations
CITYarts is proud to present the
Pieces for Peace Traveling Exhibition at the United Nations
headquarters, in collaboration with the United
Nations Office
for Partnerships and the United Nations Department of Public Information
under the royal patronage of Her Highness Sheikha
Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, President
of Dubai Women Establishment, wife of His Highness
Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al Nahyan, Deputy Prime
Minister and Minister for Presidential Affair UAE.
Pieces for Peace with Youth from around the World
is CITYarts’ flagship international project under
the
Young Minds Build Bridges program.
It aims to encourage cultural understanding between
American youth and their peers around the world.
Pieces for Peace invites youth to take
responsibility and play an active role in shaping
their future by asking themselves, “What does peace
look like to me?” Since 2002, we have received over
3,000 artworks from 50 schools in 37 countries, with
more artworks being submitted each month. Thinking
globally and acting locally, our hope is that youth
in each country will create their own “piece for
peace” at on-site workshops led by artists or
teachers. Two Peace Walls already exist in Harlem,
New York and Karachi, Pakistan, and a new Peace Wall
will be created at each destination of the
exhibition.
CITYarts recently self-published an interactive
Peace Book, launched in conjunction with this
exhibition, which highlights student artworks and
the creative process of this ongoing international
project.
Since 1968, CITYarts has empowered youth to make a
difference in their lives and in their communities
through the creation of public art. Please visit
www.cityarts.org for more information.
This exhibition first opened in New York in 2005 at
the Freedom Festival at Flushing Town Hall
celebrating 300 nationalities in Queens. It then
traveled to The Cork Gallery at Lincoln Center and
other locations in New York and New Jersey.
Internationally, the exhibition has traveled to
Germany, Egypt, Israel, and Spain. Most recently, it
was on display at the European Parliament building
in Brussels, Belgium in October 2009. Plans are
being made to have the exhibition travel to China,
Korea, Malta, Dubai, and London over the next three
years. This exhibition includes a selection of
highlighted artworks.
“The United Nations is an ideal location for this
exhibition, a place where representatives from
around the world work for a common goal. We hope
that international Ambassadors will see the
potential power of these creative minds and be
inspired to bring CITYarts’ project to schools and
youth organizations in their countries and help us
continue to spread this youth movement for peace to
every country in the world.”
