New York,
NY
(October
21, 2009) – Actor and director André
Gregory, actor and playwright Wally
Shawn, Academy Award nominated director
Noah Baumbach and Emmy and Golden
Globe Award winning actress Candice
Bergen hosted an IN-House
screening of
“My Dinner with André” on October 20th
at Soho House. They showcased the unique
and influential 1981 film, which starred
Wally Shawn and André Gregory and was
directed by the celebrated French director
Louis Malle. Candice Bergen was
joined by her daughter Chloe, stepson
Coutemoc Malle, Diane Sawyer,
directors Mike Nichols, Amy Heckerling
and Whit Stillman. The night,
which was presented by THE WEEK and
Glenlivet, celebrated the film’s restoration
by Nouvelles Éditions de Films and recent
DVD release by the Criterion Collection.
Wally Shawn shared with the audience, “I
started writing plays and I thought
everybody would like them, but it wasn’t
true. And the first person in the
professional theater who I met, who liked
what I wrote, and this was after introducing
myself to everybody on the street for many,
many, many years, was
Andre Gregory.”
Guests including Amanda
Ross, Poppy de Villeneuve, model
Nicola Mar, Vanessa Neumann, Kate Schelter,
Dr. Kevin Plancher, Michele Gerber Klein
and Rocco Dispirito congratulated
IN-House founder Katrina Pavlos and
THE WEEK’s marketing director Alain Begun
for bringing the film’s two principals
together.
About My Dinner with
Andre:
In Louis
Malle’s captivating and philosophical “My
Dinner with André,” actor and playwright
Wallace Shawn sits down with friend and
theater director André Gregory at an Upper
West Side restaurant, and the two proceed
into an alternately whimsical and despairing
confessional on love, death, money, and all
the superstition in between. Playing
variations on their own New York–honed
personas, Shawn and Gregory, who also wrote
the screenplay, dive in with introspective,
intellectual gusto, and Malle captures it
all with a delicate, artful detachment. A
fascinating freeze-frame of cosmopolitan
culture, “My Dinner with André” remains a
unique work in cinema history.
