A group of animals lovers gathered recently at McCarty’s to celebrate National Feral Cat Day as signed by mayoral proclamation. Celebrity Bartenders, Dr’s. Mary Ellen Scully and Brad Ochstein were on hand to assist, while Chairpersons and volunteers distributed prizes and literature describing the purpose of the organization. President of Island Cats is Allen Mason, Zelda Mason is Secretary and Gertrude Maxwell Hurwitz is Honorary Chairman. Alexandra Hufty Anlyan is Vice President, David Leavitt is Treasurer and Leslie Moss
is Director.
The purpose of Island Cats Inc. is to call for a proactive approach for the care of feral cats. When feral and stray cats are taken into shelters, the chances of survival are slim to none.
The nationally recognized advocate for T-N-R (Trap-Neuter-Return) is Alley Cat Allies, which launched the National Feral Cat Day nine years ago as a way to help stop killing the cats in shelters. Their position has broadened and now promotes the protection of feral cats. According to the group, feral cats live healthy lives on their own and are content in their outdoor environment.
