The
life-saving
accomplishments
of 13
area
residents
were
celebrated
at the
9th
Annual
American
Red
Cross
Real
Heroes
Awards &
Luncheon
on
Wednesday,
June 23
at the
Kravis
Center.
The
luncheon
honored
professional
rescuers,
law
enforcement
officials,
upstanding
youth
and
quick-thinking
bystanders
who were
nominated
by
members
of the
community
for
their
heroic
achievements
in 10
categories.
Over 250
guests
in
attendance
showed
their
support
including
West
Palm
Beach
Mayor
Lois
Frankel,
Jupiter
Vice
Mayor
Wendy
Harrison,
Sunny

Radio
Host
Rick
Shockley,
and WPBF
25 News
Anchor
Tiffany
Kenney,
who
emceed
the
event.
Herme de
Wyman Miro
accepted her
Real Hero
Honoree
Award
from West
Palm Beach
Mayor Lois
Frankel.
After Mrs.
Miro’s long
list of
charitable
involvements
and deeds
were
highlighted,
Mayor
Frankel
smiled and
said, “I’m
thinking,
maybe you
would like
to be mayor
of West Palm
Beach.” Mrs.
Miro
laughed,
“No, I don’t
think I set
the world on
fire but in
my own
little way,
I did as
much as I
could.” Mrs.
Miro, who
founded the
International
Society of
Palm Beach
which has
distributed
over 1,750
grants and
scholarships
to worthy
charities
totaling
over $3
million,
added, “It’s
my duty,
it’s
something
you have to
do.”

the luncheon
followed by
the singing
of the
National
Anthem by
vocalist Lou
Galterio.
One by one,
the heroic
acts of each
award winner
was
celebrated
with a
special
feature
story
produced by
WPBF 25
News. Each
award
recipient
was then met
on stage
with a Real
Hero plaque
and applause
that
expressed
messages of
congratulations,
appreciation
and
gratitude.
When
accepting
their
awards, each
Real Hero
spoke of
others that
helped them
accomplish
great deeds
and thanked
the American
Red Cross
and those in
attendance
for
recognizing
their
efforts.
Created in
2002, the
Real Hero
Award honors
individuals
who
exemplify
the
long-standing
mission of
the American
Red Cross to
respond to
emergencies
and provide
relief to
victims of
disasters.
