Salvation
Army
Northwest
Community
Center
competed in
the United
States
Specialty
Sports
Association
(USSSA)
State
Championship
Game held in
Tampa,
Florida over
the June 11th
weekend.
The
Salvation
Army team
captured the
title in a
65 to 49
victory over
the Florida
Phenoms from
Naples.
This is the
first state
title for
the Seventh
Grade male
traveling
basketball
team and the
first
tournament
win this
year.
“This team
has been
playing
against
eighth
graders all
season, but
the kids
kept focused
and peaked
during a
critical
hour for a
big
accomplishment,”
said
Athletic
Director,
Dennis
Hanna. “I
am excited
for these
kids and the
city of West
Palm Beach,
this puts us
on the map
as having
outstanding
basketball
players in
Palm Beach
County,”
continues
Hanna.
The
Salvation
Army
Northwest
Community
Center
Seventh
Grade Travel
Team has
aspirations
of traveling
to the
Amateur
Athletic
Union (AAU)
Nationals
held in
Memphis,
Tennessee
June 27th
thru July 4th.
“This is a
once in a
lifetime
opportunity
for these
boys to play
against
other teams
from across
the country
and measure
their skills
on a
national
level,” says
Hanna.
To
accommodate
the trip The
Salvation
Army must
come up with
nearly
$15,000 to
provide
lodging,
transportation,
as well as
meals and
tournament
fees for the
team of ten
boys and two
coaches to
participate.
The
Salvation
Army is
encouraging
the
community to
rally behind
these young
men whom
have
captured the
State Title
for West
Palm Beach
and
contribute
to their
fund by
sending

youth,

Athletic

Hanna.
“Whether it
be
athletically
or
academically
we need to
be there as
parents and
mentors to
our local
youth. We
owe it to
those whom
made an
impression
in our lives

and inspired
us that we
too could be
great
achievers,”

Salvation

Northwest
Community
Center is to

opportunities
for local
children to
be exposed
to positive
influences
through
mentoring,
character
building
workshops,
tutoring and
recreational
activities.
The
Salvation
Army strives
to build
community
networks and
to
collaborate
with local
residents,
agencies and
businesses
to provide
social
services.
