New York
– May 20,
2010 -
The Charles
B. Benenson
Grove was
unveiled in
a ceremony
at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts on
Thursday,
May 20,
2010. This
major gift
was donated
by Charles
B.
Benenson’s
three sons,
Bruce W.
Benenson,
Frederick C.
Benenson and
Lawrence B.
Benenson in
memory of
their
father, a
highly
regarded
real estate
industry
leader with
a strong
commitment
to
philanthropy
and a
devoted
patron of Lincoln Center.
Charles B.
Benenson was
the second
generation
of
leadership
at Benenson
Capital
Partners,
building a
portfolio of
land and
properties
around the United States that totals more than
12.5 million
square feet.
He provided
leadership
in New York City’s real estate
and business
community,
as well as
in
philanthropic
endeavors in
the City,
nationally
and
internationally
until his
death in
2004.
The Charles
B. Benenson
Grove,
one of Lincoln Center’s redevelopment projects to
renovate the
16-acre
urban
campus,
anchors
the new
Lincoln
Center
Promenade on
Columbus
Avenue.
The
3,500-square-foot
urban grove,
adjacent to
the David H.
Koch Theater
at 62nd Street and Columbus Avenue,
features
approximately
35 quaking
aspen trees.
The
innovative
and dynamic
design
creates an
inviting
entrance at
the
southeast
portion of
the campus,
which
include
benches
for
the public’s
enjoyment.
In a joint
statement,
Charles B.
Benenson’s
three sons
Bruce W.
Benenson,
Frederick C.
Benenson and
Lawrence B.
Benenson
said, “Our
father was
passionate
about the
arts and Lincoln Center in
particular.
The urban
grove
project is a
truly
fitting and
lasting
tribute to
the man who
gave to
New York
City
in so many
ways
throughout
his life. It
is a gift to
the
community,
and on a
personal
note, it is
a gift in
honor of our
father from
his loving
children who
want him
remembered
in a place
he
treasured.”
Lincoln Center
president
Reynold Levy
said, “We
are
delighted
for the
generous
gift from
Charlie
Benenson’s
three sons,
as a living
tribute to
their father
that honors
his
tradition of
philanthropy
and his love
of the arts
and this
institution.
The Charles
B. Benenson
Grove is an
oasis within
the oasis of
art and
music and
dance that Lincoln Center provides for the City and visitors
from around
the world.”
About The
Benenson
Family and
Benenson
Capital
Partners
The Benenson
family's
real estate
business,
Benenson
Capital
Partners,
was founded
by Benjamin
Benenson in
1905 and
grew into an
industry
leader under
his
guidance,
until his
death in
1938. The
founder's
son, Charles
B. Benenson,
began his
career in
1933.
Beginning a
career
during the
severest
economic
downturn,
his tenacity
and skills
proved to be
a dynamic
combination.
For more
than seven
decades the
company
prospered
under his
guidance
until his
death in
2004,
participating
in the
economic
growth of
the
United
States
by expanding
its real
estate
portfolio
and
maintaining
a keen
contrarian
eye for
long-term
values. The
company is
one of the
few private
companies in
the real
estate
industry
built on a
tradition
that spans
over 100
years.
Today's new
generation
of
leadership
includes
Bruce W.
Benenson,
Frederick C.
Benenson and
Lawrence B.
Benenson,
the
founder's
grandsons,
who, like
their
father,
remain
committed to
philanthropic
support of
many of the
city’s major
institutions.
Company
executives
Richard A.
Kessler,
James E.
Stifel and
Lloyd D.
Stabiner
provide a
level of
continuity
and
expertise
that is
unmatched in
the real
estate
investment
community.
